Deputy Sheriff Kevin Mayse succumbed to injuries sustained in a vehicle crash during a pursuit four days earlier.
His patrol car struck a tree on West 172nd Street, west of Holmes Road, during the pursuit. The driver he was pursuing was charged with manslaughter but convicted only of leaving the scene of an accident.
Deputy Mayse had served with the Cass County Sheriff's Office for three years. He was survived by his expectant wife, two daughters, and son.
