Captain Myers,
I am now in my 24th year with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Reading the other reflections above I see that you too was in your 24th year of service, I did not realize that. It is quite the consquence that our service with our respective departments is 24 years. But we have more in common than that. I was one of the two responding officers that responded to your call that fatal day. It is a call that I shall never forget. I never had the oppurtunity to thank you for your support and input of my being hired as a police officer with the Kenova Police Dept., just 10 days prior to that fatal day. I thank you Caption Myers from the bottom of my heart. I left K.P.D. nearly 6 years later to where I am today. I am certain it would not have been possible without our lives having crossed in time. I only knew you for 10 days, however I will never forget you. Rest in peace sir.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 30th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know that both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace. Thanks to your family and friends for sharing their memories and devotion to you their refletions.

Rest In Peace.

Dad,

You are in my thoughts everyday. I would not be here today if you had not pulled me from the house fire I was trapped in when I was 3. You watched over me then and I know that you watch over all of us now. You were then and you continue to be my hero. I may not have told you enough when I was growing up how much I loved you, but I feel in my heart that you always knew. You have not met your grandchildren, but through my many stories you live on in their hearts. Your first grandson, Shawn Wesley, now has a son of his own, born 3/19/08, named Jonas Wesley. As you can see, your family honors you and your name lives on. I would not be suprised when Jonas has a son of his own, that his middle name will also be Wesley. Just know that you will always be alive in my heart and the hearts of others that knew and loved you. You will never be forgotten. I love you dad.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

As a young boy growing up in Kenova, everyone knew Officer Myers. He was a legend of sorts. I was serving in the U.S.Army when my grandmother, Charlene Dickerson, wrote and told me of the bad news. I have often wondered about his family.

God bless you, sir.
