Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Eugene Capell Moore

Eugene C. Moore was a first cousin to my great grandfather, Thomas N. Moore, my mom’s granddad.
Thank you Eugene for your service. Sorry your children had to grow up without their father.
God Bless all of our patrolman who go to work every day putting their life in danger to protect us all.
In God We Trust!

First Cousin 3 times removed.

As a child I grew up in Atoka County and knew Deputy Moore’s wife Minnie. She told me many times the story how her husband was gunned down by the Burrow Gang. Today , there stands a memorial on the side of the highway in Stringtown , Ok where he and Sheriff Maxwell were shot. Over the past 50 years I have served and retired as an Oklahoma Lawman. I served with the Oklahoma City Police Dept where I retired after 34 years as a detective. Then 12 years as the Chief Special Agent in charge of the L/E division for the Ok Dept of Ag. Today I’m still serving. I have never forgotten the story about the sacrifices Deputy Moore made on his fateful night, when he and the sheriff came upon the Burrows and gang. It taught me to always expect the unexpected. Long live the memories of the Deputies, and what generations of lawmen have learned from their sacrifice.

Last night I couldn’t get Sheriff Maxwell and Deputy Moore off my mind. I am a great-niece of Deputy Moore. This morning I woke up to discover that two Tulsa police officers were shot and in critical condition. I’m praying for these officers and their families and loved ones, just as I have prayed for Sheriff Maxwell, Deputy Moore and their families and loved ones. May God be with our police officers and their families.

I am always disappointed how these animals are glorified in film and folklore and how the reporting is both in error and incomplete. My Grandfather was Sheriff C. G. Maxwell and was the first to address Clyde who began shooting him through the door of the car. He was much more than just wounded. He was shot seven times and was able to empty his sidearm at the fleeing criminals who overturned their car and fled on foot. My Grandfather was in a full body cast for a year and was disabled for the remainder of his life. His earning capacity was greatly diminished and his family was severely impacted. While my Grandfather was not killed I think that you will agree that he gave everything he had to give. Taking nothing away from Deputy Moore and his family I believe that Sheriff Maxwell along with the other wounded and killed by this group of animals should be recognized as well.

I recently watched “The Highwaymen” which is the story of the hunt for and the eventual justice brought to Bonnie and Clyde. This film, in my humble opinion, unlike the previous movies, acknowledges and shows respect for the Law Enforcement Officers who lost their lives to these animals and does not show them to be any kind of folk hero. It was long overdue.

Though the name of each and every Officer is not mentioned, some are and I believe the sacrifice by all is honored.

God Bless you, Deputy Sheriff Moore and may your eternal rest remain ever peaceful, Brother.

RIP, brother. It is very sad that society knows Bonnie and Clyde so well, yet not the fine law enforcement officers that they murdered in cold blood. We will never forget the sacrifice that you made.

It is so sad that the Bonnie and Clyde Gang are so well known. As a society we glorify the criminals and either ignore Hero’s like you or make the Hero’s appear like the criminals. It is very sad that the names of Bonnie and Clyde are known even to our children, when it is your name Sheriff Eugene Moore that should be known. You are a hero and a man to be looked up to. May you rest in peace and thank you and your family for the ultimate sacrifice. WE are a better people today because you walked among us yesterday. God Bless

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 81rst anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to be among the first to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

Your killers and their gang were glorified by the film industry...this still happens today and it infuriates me that criminals are glorified in movies instead of the heroes like yourself.

My grandfather, Oscar Folsom, was the sheriff at the time Undersheriff Moore was killed. Dep. Moore was helping out at the time as my grandfather was home ill. It was a sad conclusion to an encounter with a truly evil and cowardly gang. My family returned Dep. Moore's gun to his family some years back, with thanks and gratitude. My respects to his family and all the other grieving familes.

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).

We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.

Deputy Moore, you are remembered on this date of your death. You will always be remembered. You were a true hero.

These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.
