Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Jack B. Miller

Your 2nd grand-daughter was born 10/19 and what a sweet little darlin' she is. She looks more like a Miller than little Katie does. Katie is a beautiful, sweet, loving and proud big sister who you would be very proud of. I'm sure you would be happy to know our family is growing and growing. We all miss you so much Jack and talk about you often. It's still hard to believe why bad things happen to such good people. Love you brother and hope you are resting in peace. xo

Deputy Miller,

Your picture was just shown on COPS so I wanted to learn more about you.
Your picture showed a very young & goodlooking man with a genuine smile.

I cannot THANK YOU enough, Deputy Miller, for your level of BRAVERY while you served within an extremely dangerous job assignment.

As a result of all your hard work, the lives you have personally saved is immeasurable.

THANK YOU SO MUCH

Chris

My father's name is Rick Reynoso and he was one of Jack's partners while working for the Los Angeles County Sherrif's department. Growing up I heard many great stories about Jack from my mother and father. My parents actually named me after Jack. My name is Jack Bryan Reynoso. I wish I could have known him like my father did. I'm sorry for you family's loss. I also lost my father three years ago, but it honestly brings me joy knowing that my father and Jack are in heaven together again.

When I was young my dad made me a little memorial type thing that he hung on his wall. It had pictures of Jack and my father in it and also picture of Jack with his two daughters. My dad always wanted me to know where I got my name from and to this day the memorial still hangs on my wall. Again, I'm sorry for your family's loss, but know that he is in a better place and people are happy to have him up there.

Today would be your 58th birthday and you are missed by so many and remembered by all who knew you. Not a year goes by that I don't meet someone new who shares a thought or story about you. I love hearing others reflect on times spend with you. I'm so lucky to have had you as my brother. Your second grandchild will be born this year and it is just so wrong that you aren't here to celebrate with us. Missing you and loving you as much as ever.

I had the privilege of working three shifts with Jack at Malibu Station. He was a true professional and a fine person.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 24th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. I pray for solace for all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever.

Today we should be celebrating your 55th birthday, instead I'm remembering the many good times we shared and the memories we made. I'm going to be a grandma in a couple of months and so wish that you and Dad were here to share this time with me. Our grandson is going to be named "Jack". I can't wait to share stories of his Grandpa Jack and his Great Uncle Jack with him. Love you Brother!

My Brother, my friend,

Our brother, Jim just found this website and told me about it. I've read every word and I'm smiling through my tears. I love to hear that others think of you and share their memories. Oh how I miss you. Twentyone years ago I was helping the Department arrange your memorial...so much has happened and you've missed so much. Seeing both of your daughters get married this year will be bittersweet because you are not walking them down the aisle. They are beautiful, bright young ladies and would make you proud. We all keep your memory alive and you will be in our hearts forever.

Its been so many years now, but your death still haunts me.I was flying Air 21 that night, and watched it all unfold....I then flew to Van Nuys to pick up your family and flew them to the hospital...Until the day I die, I'll always wish I could have helped. You were a great friend in Malibu. We had alot of laughs...See you soon..

"It was 20 years ago today"...lyrics we should be remembering, not your untimely passing. My dearest Jack, not a day has gone by without a thought of you...a silly joke, 'helping' on a test, baking that winning pie, throwing a TD, simply, our talks and walks, being a BFF (as they say nowadays).

Hearts and flowers, blessings and memories will be left for you today at your memorial...and all those kids, now younger than our own, who walk by will witness and know your sacrifice and gentle kindness, your friendship and deep love.

Your aura is still there. I'll always be your buddy; miss you so much.

Laura,

Your dad and I were academy mates in 1976 and we worked custody together early in our careers. I still remember his innocent and somewhat nervous looking smile, slow walk, and slow talk which, if you were not careful, would lure you into the snare of his quick wit and dry humor. He took great delight in catching his prey time and time again, such delight bringing forth that unforgettable smile for which he is oftentimes remembered. I can still see and hear his W.C. Fields imitations. He delighted in that but his audience delighted all the more. He was a kind man and my memories of him have brought me both warmth and pain over the years.

Within the multitudes of those with whom I have had the privilege of working alongside over the past 32 years some of my fondest memories take on your dad’s face. It is not what a man does that develops his legacy, but who he is. Your dad was a good man.

Your entry brought me to tears as I considered your pain and then considered my own daughter. May the God and Father of the Lord Christ bring you the comfort which He alone can deliver.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Jack,

Lennox Station will never forget you. It was an honor to be apart of the "Memorial Wall" committee at the station. God Bless you and your family. I will have a good thought for them on the anniversary of that tragic day. You are a true hero Jack!

There isn't a day that goes by that Jack is not in my mind and heart...I dream of him often and hope he knows how many of us still think of him and to this day cannot believe he is not somewhere throwing a football. Our 10 year reunion pic still sits on the dresser as important as my husband's and kid's...Jack, you were so missed at the 20th and 30th and spoke of often. I can still hear you voice so clear telling your silly jokes, (the naughty ones you'd say your Uncle told you!). I miss you turning around in class to 'see' the answers. I miss our close friendship and personal talks to this day. You were truly my best male friend. I wish we could discuss old times and how we're getting older, how our kids have grown and what they are doing now (we haven't seen Donna or the girls since '89 but I can imagine they are beautiful and hopefully doing real well). My own son is even named after you. You were taken so unfairly from us and your family and I think of you and all the other fallen officers day to day, from 9/11 and sadly so many young soldiers in a war you wouldn't have liked.
But Jack, your spirit lives on, we visit your beautiful memorial in the Polygon at Poly and leave flowers. It's right by the apple machine Jack!

Your friend always

I miss you and I wish I had been older so I could've known you better. I'll always love you and there's still an emptiness in my heart because you were taken from me. Thank you to everyone that has written memories about my father.

I was just remembering when a bunch of us who worked day shift at CJ in the late seventies. I also remember the great times we all had playing cards. The last time I saw Jack was a few weeks before my retirement from Malibu. He looked great, his spirit was high and he was happy to be working Narco. Take care Buddy, you are missed!

I was watching an episode of COPS yesterday and at the end they showed a picture of a handsome man smiling brightly. Beneath it were the words "Dedicated to the memory of Deputy Jack Miller." I decided to come to ODMP and see how Deputy Miller left this world. I am sorry to see that it was in such a voilent manner. Deputy Miller, thank you for laying down your life to serve the citizens of Los Angeles County. If I'm not mistaken Los Angeles County lost a deputy just a few months ago, too. Maybe the 2 of you are up in heaven swapping war stories and laughing over some hard-ass sergeant that you couldn't breathe right to please. I know you're in a better place...one not overrun by criminals looking for the opportunity to take one of our brothers in blue. One day I'll see you there...until then, take care and Rest in Peace.
