Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Jack B. Miller

Hard to believe it's 29 years ago you left a hero.
Your beautiful smile is always by my side.
Will honor you at your Poly memorial today.
Always with Love.

Your buddy

January 9, 2017

Time is flying by, 29 years now since we lost you on 1/9/88. Mom and I just spent time reliving moment by moment that Friday night of 1/8/88. She is always asking if I thought you would have all gray hair by now. Funny the things she thinks of. All's well around here but would be so much better to be sharing life with you. The Dept. posted your photo (the one none of us think is very flattering) on Facebook with the details of your death. I check daily to read posts from friends/co-workers who leave a little reflection of you. You really made an impression on lots of people, your smile and humor are mentioned often. It really should not surprise me. You were a very handsome, good-humored, funny guy. I just probably never told you that because you were "just my little brother." I have a feeling you knew how much I admired and loved you though, as did Janice, Jim and Steve. To them you were their big brother who also stepped up when Dad passed away. We all miss you Jack and speak of you often. Your 3 grandkids and my 4 are still very close and love spending time together. They trick-or-treated together just like your girls did with my boys back in the "old" days. I know you would be so proud of your family. Keep looking over us Jack, this world of ours seems to be getting crazier and crazier. Missing and loving you alwys...

My dear Jack,

This week you would have celebrated your 62nd year...yes, my friend, we are getting old, but only in number. Still cheering for you on the field, remembering our many hours of phone and in person talks, and sharing wonderful memories of growing up are never more than a thought away and as close as your photo on my nightstand.. as if we are still in that place in the 60s/70s. Not a day goes by without saying good morning and that hopefully, one day I'll see you again. With Love.

Today we would be celebrating your 62nd birthday. Recently Laura told me how much she enjoys this website because she loves reading the posts made by friends of yours. I like to share stories I hear when I meet old LASD classmates/friends of yours. At the LASD retirement reunion I read the name tag Craig Boyett, I immediately remembered that he was backing you up the night of your shooting. He shared that when you asked him and Vic Moore to help out, the last words you spoke were "be sure to wear a vest." Sitting at the same table was a LASD classmate who shared stories and obviously thought a lot of you. He said several other classmates of yours were there but unfortunately our paths didn't cross. It's hard to picture you as retired , I'm sure we would share some good times. As alway, loved you then, love you still and always will my brother.

I cannot tell you how much I think of you and all our great times. You have always been a great inspiration to me and a true American Hero. I honestly do not know if you realized how many people loved and admired you for so long. You were just the best!

I really enjoy reading Linda's updates about your grand kids and everything that is going on. I know you are looking over everyone as our protector. You are truly missed my friend.....Poly High 72

I think of you every day Jack. Your picture hangs over my desk. You my friend, my partner; you were my mentor, my golf partner. I was a wet sandwich in the day and you were always there for me. You were the first guy I rode in a radio car with; Lynwood and Malibu. Miss you a lot cop I ever knew....

I can't believe it's 28 years since you were taken from us. I think of you each and every day as your photo is on my nightstand always. I miss our talks, your laugh, you funny 'spicy' jokes, copying my test answers, walking home from school, helping each other with our 'loves' but mostly, I miss knowing my best buddy was always there, I know you still are.

January 10, 2016

We've missed you for 28 years now, but today, 1/8 and tomorrow, 1/9 are especially hard because these are the anniversaries of your shooting and your death. Today and tomorrow I will be replaying all those dreadful hours over and over again in my mind, wishing I could turn the clock back and somehow change the outcome. I'm happy to say you are still loved, thought of and often spoken of by many. We're close with Donna, your daughters and your 3 adorable grandchildren. In fact, eventually all 3 of yours and 2 of grandkids will be in the same elementry school together and I know that would make you smile. They all adore each other. Wish you could see how happy Mom (Granny) is when she is surrounded by all 7 great-children, it's really special. Today I will try hard to focus on the good memories of our past prior to 1/8/88 but even those will bring tears to my eyes. You will be forever loved and missed my brother. Life can be so unfair sometimes. Continue to Rest in Peace Jack, love you so much. XO

I came into work on that Sunday afternoon and was told of your passing, my heart hurt so bad. I started remembering how we first meet at Lynwood Station. You walked in the back door with a smile on your face, that made me smile also. You went to work night car with a couple of other crazy people. You made your job fun and you made everyone around you smile, even if they were in a bad mood. You are missed. Thank you for smiling down on your family and the rest of us. R.I.P. Jack Miller a one of a kind guy.

Dear Jack,
I can't believe 27 years ago I was holding my 3 year old watching tv when that horrific 'special report' came soon as they said Sheriff, I lost my breath only to see my worst fear on the screen. There isn't a day that goes by that you aren't thought of, from our early childhood through marriage.

You are and always will be my beautiful, funny, kind, sarcastic, joking, romantic pal. Your photo is always by my side and your spirit, in my heart. I so wish we could reminisce and talk about our kids and aging and great times we experienced together and with our shared friends. As always, I will leave an apple for you at your Memorial in the Polygon by the apple machine of course.

I hope you knew., I hope you know..I love you Jack, my wonderful buddy.

Today, January 8 marks the 27th anniversary of your shooting. Your EOW was 1/9/88, so long ago yet seems like yesterday in many ways. I believe in my heart you know what's going on down here on earth, but I can't help but miss you celebrating here with us the many wonderful blessings we have. It still hurts terribly not having you around and I must admit I get such comfort reading reflections left by some of your old friends/partners and even strangers. I'm thrilled every time I meet someone who will share their thoughts and stories of you. I'm hoping to hear more stories at the LASD Round-up Reunion this spring and raise a glass in your honor. I think you would be surprised at how many people loved and/or admired you and have nice things to say about their time with you. Remember Jack, we loved you then, love you still and always will.

Jack I just told my staff about our time as partners and the Mexican market case where we sipped on Cazadores after we caught all the bad guys...Every time I see a bottle, I think of you...I really miss you.

I am writing a book about my personal experiences in my 36 years of law enforcement, thoughts, feelings, memories, good times and bad. Of course, part of my story includes those men and women who I have had the privilege to work with and know over those many years. So how can I not express my love and respect for this wonderful young man, and friend.

Jack was one of the kindest, soft-spoken individuals I have ever known, with a great sense of humor and that smile of his that couldn't help but make you love him and feel connected to him. I didn't work long with Jack and our career paths took us to different parts of this huge county we served, but I never forgot the person he was and how much I enjoyed talking to him, seeing that smile, hearing his unique voice. I was crushed by the news of his murder - how can such good beautiful human beings be taken from us, too soon. I often think of Jack, and smile because of brief friendship, and I will always miss him. God bless his family, friends, and all of our brothers and sisters in law enforcement who with exemplary character and decency, make the best effort to do right by those we serve, exposing themselves to danger and risking their lives willingly for that purpose, and most especially on behalf of each other. Rest peacefully, my friend Jack.

So this is our big 60 year Jack, hard to believe the whole gang isn't just milling around the Polygon and you around the apple machine. Laid flowers and of course, an apple, at your memorial as always.

Beautiful to read your sister's postings and that you have grandchildren! You would have been an amazing Grandfather and I'm sure they will know from all how wonderful you are.

You are in our toasts and forever in our hearts, mine especially - 'old' friends always.

Miss and Love you and all the great memories I'm/we're so lucky to have.

Your buddy.

60 years ago today you were born, my first of 3 baby brothers. Oh how we miss you Jack. Today we will be celebrating at a party for your first granddaughter who will be turning 4 this week. I'll be raising a glass towards the heavens wishing you were still here with us. You'd be so happy that your granddaughters and mine are such good little friends and that they are staying close just as I know you would like. They are adorable together and your little grandson is nearly walking and he and my newest grandson who is only 6 months younger will be best little buddies I'm sure. We're carrying on without you but you are always in our thoughts, always in our hearts. Missing and loving you always.

I had forgotten the date in January when Jack was lost to family, friends and community, then an officer in my community lost his life this week. I didn't know Jack well or long, but enjoyed his company very much, my best whishes to his family.

It is so hard to believe that it has been 26 years since that horrible night. I think of you often Jack, you were a great friend and the epitome of a law enforcement officer! Going back to our days at Byrd Jr. High and Poly High were truly amazing, a lot of fun. I think about all the times we either talked sports or going into police work or somehow competing in something against each other. I am going to Poly today, straight to the apple machine and say a prayer and think about you and all the great times....Linda, your messages were so heartfelt, I went through two boxes of Kleenex. Jack would be so proud!

26 years ago yesterday we lost you and not a day goes by that you are not thought of and missed by all of us. You have an adorable little grandson now along with your 2 granddaughters and sometimes I can't help myself from crying just thinking of all you are missing out on. Tom and I are about to have another grandson and I feel guilty being able to experience life as you should have been able to as well. Hoping we meet again one day in heaven, I love you Jack, always have, always will.

I left a note yesterday stating it was 25 years...sadly, it's 26...unbelievable. We all remember you often with great stories and memories from grade school through after Poly but none more than me, you're always in my heart old pal.

With Love.

26 years ago today you were taken from us and not a day goes by that you aren't missed, loved and thought of. Your grandson is adorable and both of your granddaughters are beautiful. Somehow, more and more your laugh comes out of my mouth and I always stop and say "hi Jack" because I feel you are here with m e. It is the funniest thing, even Tom hears it.
Still loving and missing you, always will, Linda

I just saw a rerun of cops honoring your loved one. I know it was a long time ago but I also know the missing never ends. So sorry for your loss and thanks to him for his service. God bless you.
