Reflections for Deputy William E. Robinson, IV

Hero...and WARRIOR!

February 15, 2006

Brother Robinson,

May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And the rains fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Respectfully,
You’re Brothers in Blue

I went to college with will and he was, without exaggeration, one of the most genuine people I have ever met. We watched boxing, drank beer, and chatted about politics many times.

Since his death, I moved to Europe and I think of him often.

Altough I did not know you, It is always sad to hear of another officer losing his life in the line of duty no matter how far away they may be. May you rest in peace.

Will,
My first memory of you takes me back to 1970 something. We were just little boys! You and I fought over a baseball glove at practice at Walter B. That was the beginning of a lifelong friendship dear to my heart. We shared some of the best of times in high school. Football season was the best! You blocked and provided protection for me and I had the opportunity to run free. I seemingly always inevitably got caught. During baseball season, I could always look to the left field fence and spot you and the mighty "Lucitania". Man, was that a classic ride or what? After high school, we remained close friends. Eventually, you pursued law enforcement and my personal choices would cause us to drift apart. Mom and Dad told me you would drop in on Lake Laurel to make sure they were alright. I would argue that you were trying to catch a pan of biscuits coming from the oven! You never left without asking how I was doing. The last time I talked to you was at the sherrif's department. I had come and turned myself in to go serve 90-120 days for ... you know what for. You had come in the back door off patrol and I was in the holding cell. I was embarrassed, scared, and hurting inside. I heard what the other deputies were saying to you-"Why do you want to talk to him?" "That guy is a loser!" "Why waste your time?" etc. etc. I will never forget your response as long as I live. You stiffened up and deliberately looked at each one who had said something and simply yet firmly replied, "because he is my friend." No further explanation needed, you turned and walked to the holding cell where I sat. The door opened and you came in and sat down beside me. You told me how much you loved me and believed in me. You eased my fears. You said my actions were not the guy you knew. You said I could turn things around. I told you I would. My friend Will! I never thought it would be the last time I would see you alive. I saw news reports from inside I.W. Davis Detention Center. I was heartbroken beyond words and I still miss you. I also am eternally grateful, for if I could have hand-picked my guardian angel, I could not have made a better choice. My prayers are for your family and I look forward to seeing you again. Until then...GUNKYT32

Will, you and I have never met but let me assure you that the tragedy of you death is remembered here. I work the road in the adjoining county and I can atest that your brothers remember losing you. Each Baldwin County SO uniform I have ever seen wears a pin, a red pin trimmed in gold, that bears your badge number. You are not forgotten sir. You shall never be forgotten.

Your loss reminds us, reminds all the new boots in all the Georgia Academies, of a very fundimental rule. You have saved lives, much like Kyle. Everyone around here remembers because of your death; that just because you have delt with a punk in the past and he did not try to hurt you then, there is no favor that he may not try you this time. I thank you for the lesson, and I remember it often. God Bless You Will Robinson from Putnam 129.

Deputy Sheriff Chris Harper
Putnam County SO, Georgia

I was working the night you were killed. Its 2003 but I can still remember all of the look outs that were given by out 911 Center the night it happened. We are all so close in this job. If you dont love policing you just dont stay, so it makes the ones who do family. When you died a piece of me died with you. The lessons we have learned from your death have saved lives. Im just sorry I could not be there to help you, even though you were several counties away. Everyone on the job felt guilty. We miss you.
