Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Earl Mendenhall

I’ve only heard stories and seen pictures, but biologically you are my grandfather. My mother is Sue, your daughter. It saddens me that she has so few memories of you before your death. I wish that your life had not been tragically cut short so that all of your children could have had an opportunity to get to know each other and you better.
Rest easy.

Dad,
You are not forgotten. Your grandson just came across an original 1958 Ventura PD motorcycle that looks much the same as the one in your picture. Coincidence? He shared the picture with the owners. It brought tears to all after so many years.
It has taken my memories back to the 1950's.

Grandpa, I never got the chance to know you, but then neither did my dad or his twin brother really. I do know that you were loved, and that you are always missed. You are the namesake of your grandson, my little brother. You are a hero in the hearts and eyes of many and always will be. You hang on our wall in the house and everyday I tell your great grandson who you are, were and the heroism you portrayed.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 49th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Uncle Earl,

I remember you almost every day. We moved to Oak View, California because of you and you were like a father to me. I remember hearing you died while listening to the radio that day...It scared me so bad, I was only 8 at the time. I still have your Log book from that day and newspaper articles from that day. You would be happy to know your Family at the time are now all back in contact with us and your children are doing well. It was nice seeing these tributes, your were taken away to young but you are honored each and every day....Thanks everyone.

My mother knew Officer Mendenhall when she was a young girl living in Ventura, California. She told me he was very kind and considerate to her and her family. She also wonders what happened to his wife and children. Every time I pass the Police Officer memorial in Downtown Sacramento, California, I stop and pay tribute to his name.
