"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

John and I were friends from when we were children and attended Immaculate Conception Grade School, Germantown, Phila, PA. We lost touch when I went to Milton Hershey School and then met up again in the Philadelphia Police Academy Class 168. We both went to the 22nd District and worked in the same squad. I was working the ajoining sector the night John was murdered by Bullock and Hogan. I was probably the second car on the scene. John was still in the patrol car. PO Detino removed him and carried him into the wagon that took him to the hospital. John had survived being a Marine in Vietnam. Only to come home and die on the streets of Philadelphia. I remember that one of my first thoughts were of his child and how she would grow up without a father. I often think of John, even more since my retirement from the department. John was a "Good Person" and a "Good Cop". We all miss him, but know he is with God.

JOHN, I NEVER KNEW YOU BUT I WAS A NEW OFFICER WITH THE PHILA HOUSING POLICE IN 1993. ONE OF MY FIRST ARRESTS WAS A GUY THAT WAS SELLING PCP AT 21ST AND DIAMOND. WHEN WE TOOK HIM TO NORTH CENTRAL DETECTIVES, I WAS TOLD THIS ANIMAL TOOK YOUR LIFE. I USED TO GO INTO LODGE 5 AND LOOK AT YOUR PICTURE, AND SHED A TEAR FOR YOUR SACRIFICE. I JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT I HOPE YOU ARE RESTING IN PEACE, AND YOU HAVE NOT BEEN FORGOTTEN! MAYBE SOMEDAY WE CAN MEET BROTHER! YOUR BROTHER IN BLUE.....MARK

Your name caught me eye as I was browsing through this wonderful website. My brother, like you, was gunned down in his patrol car. We are also the McEntee family. Please say a prayer for our family as your watch over yours.

I hope there are others out there remembering John and his young life cut short. 35 years ago, I along with many others, were hoping to prevent his death. He is often still in my thoughts and especially this week as another officer has been killed in the line of duty. I honor all law enforcement officers who have come and gone and who still go out every day to do their job. You are special!

As I sit here and look through the officers in my department that have paid the ultimate sacrifice I noticed that no one had yet left a message,I think about the location where your life was taken and I drive past there often and will not forget about you. I just wanted to say that you are NOT forgotten my brother and rest well.
