Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Correctional Officer Josephine Birdene McCallum

Death is nothing at all.
It does not count.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
Nothing has happened.

Everything remains exactly as it was.
I am I, and you are you,
and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.

Call me by the old familiar name.
Speak of me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no difference into your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.

Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it.

Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same as it ever was.
There is absolute and unbroken continuity.
What is this death but a negligible accident?

Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval,
somewhere very near,
just round the corner.

All is well.
Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost.
One brief moment and all will be as it was before.

This such a travesty the family has had to suffer for so long to never really get the justice that should have been and the women officers that continue to suffer from sexual harassment have had the pleasure of meeting this family once many years ago and the pain they continue to suffer and the things that have happened to them since is so sad! Hope they see true justice someday

We helped train her at Northside. It showed us how fast situations change. Every officer at some time was in a position to be killed if prisoners deemed it so. It brought us closer together as staff. It was a tough time for all staff.

I was in the academy when you were murdered. You made me realize how dangerous the job could be. I thought of you every time I went into the auditorium. I have heard so many rumors about your death. I know one thing for sure we shall never forget you. You remain apart of me forever.

I never had the fortune to meet your mom but she walked with me many days during my career. She was very brave to work this job and her spirit was always with me as I helped conduct grief counseling for staff. I have always wished the very best for you and your family. Listen to your father and my thoughts and prayers are still with you.

I appreciate all the kind words left on this page regarding my Mom. There's not a day that goes by that my Father and I don't think of her. It's nice to know so many care and continue to care. Thank you and God bless you all.

I joined the department in 2002 and I first learned of you at the DeMarse Academy in Lansing while training. The facts, as I am told, surrounding your tradgic death, followed me many, many times as I was watching 3 block yard, alone or doing rounds in the school and the chow hall. You were my reality check and kept me from becoming too "complacent" when among prisoners. To your family, I would say, your death kept me more mindful to keep a critical distance, never let them follow behind me and keep my back to the wall. Thank you.

And to those that played a part in your passing...

To Josephine and her family and friends:

Today is the 22nd anniversary of Josephine's tragic death and the day all your lives changed forever. As I read the loving reflections left, I am mindful of the journey we all struggle with as we try to make a life for ourselves...we know that is what our beloved would want us to do, but the heart always aches for the one who can only be with us in spirit for now.

I hope that you all find some peace in your heart tomorrow as you hold your memories like the rare and beautiful pearls they are.

May Josephine's spirit continue to soar and her memory continue to inspire.

Rest in Peace, Josephine. Your valor and dedication and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
