"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Mike, You sent your daughters on an assignment to keep your killer in prison. Well, I know you are proud right now. They fought the battle of the Illinois Prisoner Review Board the whole way. Your community spoke and in the end, one vote kept him in. One member changed his vote because he felt to release him would be to depracate the seriousness of the crime and show disrespect for the law enforcement officers who are there to protect us everyday. We vow to improve laws to sentence cop killers to life-no parole, first in Illinois and then nationwide. Like the justice scale you brought back for us from Italy while serving in the Navy-we will "balance justice" so that you have not died in vain. That is a gift we promise to fullfill. You knew in heaven how messed up our laws were becoming and we have taken up the challenge that you have already placed into action for us. Keep giving us love, courage and direction as we do this for the love in our hearts for you and your fellow officers, that has never ceased to diminish, but has grown stronger with the generations that have followed. Even though your grandchildren cannot see you smiling with or at them, in their hearts, they feel your love. We hold our reflections dear in our hearts of you and continue to praise God for all our blessings. We feel your presence and follow your signs when you need us nearer for encouragement and love. Butterfly kisses and hugs with every breeze till we are lifted together. Hopefully we can post a "new law" reflection soon in your honor and in the honor ofthose who you have served with. You have a brotherhood in heaven of local officers killed also, look after their families also with them and help to bring peace to our community. Loving you always. TA P.S. He is up again for parole in May 2008 and we will be needing your help again! Love you and thanks. All your loving family memebers..................

We gladly signed an online petition ealier this year, as did THOUSANDS of others urging the parole board to keep your killer in prison, exactly where he belongs. It was the least we could do and frankly, there has to be a better system so citizens can have more of an impact on the parole process. We don't care that if released he was going to live at some 230 acre farm with his wife. We don't care that he was drunk or under the influence of drugs at the time and because of that, as was reported, made a stupid mistake. What he did was more than a mistake, he intentionally fired a weapon to facilitate his flight from his crime-armed robbery. The petition worked and the vote by the board last week was CLOSE. Another vote or two and your killer would have been freed under an idiotic theory that he is 71 and is no longer a danger to society and in fact has seved his debt to society. Well, he was sentenced 75-100 years and it seems to us he should do 75 years until he is elgible for parole. Then his debt is paid to us. Why do we citizens have to fight to keep killers in jail? God bless you and your family and we are sorry they have to go through this every year. Thousands of us will be there for them again.

Mike was a great man and father. Soon his killer will be up for parole again. Because of recent changes in ILL law and house bill #HB1695 his killer may soon be freed. After serving 33 years of a 100 year sentence. This process must be stopped and laws changed not only for the pain Mr. Ted Bacino caused my family. But for all the Men and Women who choose to wear a badge and put their lives on the line. Cop killers must never enjoy freedom.

I agree with a previous writer who wrote “No officer’s death should be without reflection.” I hope the perpetrator has been sentenced to the most severe penalty. It is an honor to be the first to leave a reflection in your memory. May the memory of your service, heroism and sacrifice remain forever.
