Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Lieutenant Herbert Berkeley Stovall, Jr.

To the family and loved ones of Lieutenant Herbert Berkeley Stovall and his fellow officers with the Peralta Community College District Police Department:

On this the eleventh anniversary of Lt. Stovall's tragic death, I wanted to honor and remember him today. His professionalism and dedication will never be forgotten, nor will his valor and courage.

In reading the loving reflections left for him, I can see that he was very well respected and is sorely missed. How awful this happened at all, but to have it happen weeks before his retirement is even more heartbreaking.

I hope that God is holding him in the sweetest part of his heart and the most gentle part of his soul.

I am so sorry that Lt. Stovall was robbed of his life so tragically, but through his heroism and the profound sense of duty with which he lived his life, he made an immeasurable difference. May his spirit continue to soar and may his memory continue to inspire.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Lt. Stovall gave to his community and the citizens of California, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on August 16, 1995.

Age and rank be damned, you showed total disregard for personal safety and did what you saw was right. For that alone you should be admired. However, it's safe to say that you were worthy of admiration for many more reasons and the actions of that night only proved that. God bless you and those you left behind. Every young cop should work hard to emulate men like you.

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

My regards to Lieutanant Stovall, who died upholding the service's motto "To Protect and Serve" I know its been almost 7 years since your untimely death, but you are in our hearts and thoughts.
