Mike - I don't know why, but out of the blue I thought about you last night. 15 years since you died and 20 since we first met up. I'll never forget the night I first saw you. I had a drugged-out nekkid guy in my back seat. You and Jim Buck had just finished your PM watch ride-alongs in Hollywood. I jumped out of the car saying, "Hey can you two guys help my trainee and I with this combative guy in our back seat?" You and Jim set down your books and pumped up your chests ready for action. The look on your faces was priceless when you got to the car door and saw the guy was nude. We all had a good laugh - your smiling picture does you justice. Later, on probation at Hollywood, there was that morning when you came to work and a (then) girlfriend had machine washed your 100% wool uniform. Almost faded and very much shrunk you got through the shift, every so often shaking your head. Mike, I smile at these stories as intently as I grimaced the day I learned you were a LODD. We felt your loss as though you were still LAPD. I feel your loss today, wishing you had your 20 in, and were looking towards retirement. May God grant you eternal rest and may His perpetual light shine upon you. We'll meet up soon enough. Scout out a nice comfy spot where we can sit back and swap stories, IF I'm found worthy to join you and the rest.

Just a random day and a reflection of the past. Seeing Mike in his cowboy hat driving his raised orange Chevy StepSide pickup, pulling skiers on McDonald's serving trays through the WHS parking lot during lunch.
I miss you brother. You are not far from my thoughts.

Michael's LAPD Recruit Class was set to soon graduate as I was assigned as an instructor to the Academy. His class was the first that I served as an assistant instructor. It is difficult to believe that it has been 13 years. I still have those news clippings-the first Simi Valley Police Department officer to be killed in the line-of-duty.

This year it was decided that Civic Center Drive in Simi Valley be renamed in honor of Michael.

You are most certainly NOT forgotten.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Hi, its been many years I have know a great thing that Officer Clark Did and he was never given credit for what seen with my own eyes. I stood as witness to him trying to save a mans life on the 118 fwy,
that was hit by a truck, I was coming home west on the 118 fwy and I noted two cars parked on the rt, side of the road, and a big box truck and in the slow lane, laying down on the road was a man that had stopped to help a nother stranded motorist when a truck with a lift gate on back that stuck out further than normal, struck the man , I think he was actualy in the lane when the truck was coming up the hill and struck this man in a suit,
I was the only one there at the time with a cell phone so I called 911 or a emergency # at the time, and the dipacher said where are you I said On the 118 west at the border of L.A. & Ventura County (Simi Vally), and the first person to so up was a parking patrolman from simi valley, and moments later A black and white Patrol Car From Simi Valley, and note the officer had to go east get & off the fry way and then come west, the parking unit man cut the mans tie off and just moments later Office Clark blocked the two lans jumped out of his crusier and ran over to the man down and started CPR and Chest Compressions and Office Clark never stopped. and I watch in Awe This officer was Realy Trying To Save The Life Of This Afrcan American Male it seamed Like 30 to 40 Minuits before LACFD And Paramedics Showed Up, Officer Clark Never Missed or Stopped The CPR & Chest Compressions I am standing There Telling him I see A fire Truck comming and now I see an abulance and I was giving Officer Clark A time frame Cause I knew He was Exhasted, then I told Him There out of there vehicles and running twards Us and the moment they reached Officer Clark They releived him from what he was doing, and took over, Office Clark Stood Up and just soaked in sweat and all pumped up from what he was doing, and I ask Him I could Leave and He said did you see this happen! and I told Him no, I the one who called (note the cell phone I had at the time was state of the art and weiged about 6 to 8 pounds) He said You can go on your way then, but I Took a moment to see his name on his uniform and noted his name was Clark and I shook His hand and said you did a galliant effort, and should be comended for it, he said its just part of the job, I noded at him and went about my way , and year or or so later I heard the news of a deranged man Shot and killed a Office in simi vally and his name was Clark, I was devastated and I think about this all the time and just now wanting to let His loved ones know what I saw office Clark do in his daily rutine as an Officer Of The law saving Lives But yet his was taken and I still just don't get it ...................... a Great Loss

My dear brother,
I was 19 years old and in college when this happened to you. I remember how hard your loved ones took it. I can't believe it's been 11 years since this happened to you. I was born and raised in Simi Valley so it hits home for me. I miss you and can sense from time to time that your star is shining down on me.

Take care brother.

It has been 11 years since your tour of duty ended and I know that those that love you carry you in their hearts every day and have not forgotten your smile, laugh and those special memories of you. Keep watch over them and protect them from harm. Also, keep watch on those still out on patrol. You have not been forgotten and are a true hero.

I still remember the day that this happened. I was about 12 years old and i just couldn't believe that a cop in Simi Valley had been shot. It made me view the job a Police Officer in a whole new way. Iv'e wanted to be a cop since as long as i can remember and hope to someday join the Simi P.D. to continue to fight for the cause that you fought and died for. People like you are a great inspiration to me. Thank you for your sacrifice Officer Clark, and may God bless your family.
