I just wanted to say,"Billy" was a good neighbor,too. My mom & I lived downstairs from him for a number of years on Grand Ave. near Avers. He once chased a burglar from our doorway during a weekday when no one was home. He used to make my mom angry when he played his music too loud (LOL) but he was a great guy and is still remembered by me and my family!

Dan ~ thank you for sharing your uncle Billy with us on this site. I remember as if it were yesterday..I was watching the news and they reported the tragedy and their names...which should have never been done, until the family was notified. I also remember back in 1974..CPO's did not wear vests.. Today his his Angel Day..and I so honor and loved your uncle. Stay safe on the CFD and remember my grandpa was a fireman too

40 years ago today is the anniversary of a fallen Hero. We all have wonderful memories about Uncle Billy. Back in the day I remember polishing his name plate and badge before he would "hit the streets". He taught me honor and respect. We love you Officer Friendly!

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 38th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer. He was also your brother in green so I bid you semper fi and thank you for your service in the Corps.

Time never diminishes respect and your memory will always be honored amd revered. I pray for the solace of all those who love and miss you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your famiy is in my heart's embrace. Thanks to your friends and family for sharing their memories and devotion to you through their reflections.

"Big Bird" to this day you and Bruce have not been forgotten, and definitely missed. I recall our conversation we had on the corner of Addison and Halsted, deciding where to meet for a drink later after work, minutes before we lost two loved brothers in blue. I still have a drink to honor a great loss, two dedicated officers who gave up their lives for us. The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Dear Uncle Billy,

Your death was very difficult for our entire family. I was only 11 years old when you were taken from us. With the good Lords help we were able to move on. The pain of your loss seemed to diminish throughout the years, but the love and memories have gone on and will forever.

Now that I am 45 years old and speaking as a mother, I truly beleive there is no greater loss than the loss of a child no matter what the circumstance may be. I noticed the pain in my Nana (your mother) every day of her life. It was far too difficult for her to hide. I couldn't understand then... but I can today.

Not only were born to be a hero... you were born to love and be loved by so many people. In your honor, friends and family gather together each year to reminis on the joys and laughter you gave us when you were here on earth.

I love you Uncle Billy!

Uncle Billy, Seems like just yesterday i was sitting on the couch watching TV when a special bulletin came across the screen announcing that you have been shot and killed in the line of duty.It was truly the worst thing i have ever experienced. I will never forget how much you loved being a police officer and what a great uncle you were and how you turned my life around right before you died.You fought for are country as a Marine fought for our city and you died a hero in all of are heart's.
