One of your classmates and I were talking about you the other day. The years just keep going by. It seems like that tragic moment happened yesterday but it seems like a lifetime since I've seen your face. I wish everyone could have your enthusiasm and love of the job. We miss you, Bubba. We think of you always and love you still. You truely were an inspiration. Thank you for that and all the great times together.

You are remembered today Bubba. Thirteen years ago you left for a far better place. We carry on the traditions of the blue and gray. Rest easy my brother.

Bubba, we're updating our memorial, and the other day I got a sneak preview of the newly framed pictures that will be displayed on our memorial. The very first framed picture that I saw was of you. It made me think of easy times, of good times, and of happy times with you at school. I can't help but laugh when I think of "the gang" from our neighborhood playing and ridin bikes on those hot summer days. I was so proud the day that you graduated from patrol school. When we have our memorial service next week, I'll say an extra prayer for you, and give your mama and sister a hug for you.

A Friend from High School

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I remember Bubba from the Academy. He was in Trooper class #48 and I was in Basic #163. His death opened my eyes to the reality of the dangers of the job and reminded me to kiss my loved ones every time I left home. I recall Bubba was an inspiration to his fellow cadets at the Academy and was loved by all.

You are truly missed Brother.

I prayed and begged God to get me through Trooper School. Thanks for running with me on the mornings I was scared. Thanks for your faithful service. You are still talked about through out the highway patrol. You are sorely missed. We love you, and you'll never be forgotten.

I miss you, Bubba. I'll always remember the days of working the radio together in Starkville. You kept me in the best moods, not matter what. My Dad was killed in the line of duty just as your were in 1959 and you were both 30 at the time. You will be in my thoughts, as always, along with my Dad, Daniel Smith.
