Reflections for Trooper Chong Soo Lim

Chong, I was an intern finishing college back in 1994. I spent six weeks with investigations and six with patrol. I was paired up with you the week you spent off the road with investigations. You were one of the great ones. I remember driving with you in a full sized van that we were relocating back to Des Plaines - think it was going to be used for work with the World Cup which was in Chicago that summer. As we came up to a toll, I remember the funny look the toll booth operator gave you when a couple of young guys in plain cloths drive up to the to booth and say, "this is a police vehicle, let us through". Your badge went a long way for that one. Hard to believe that was 30 years ago. I barely knew you, but your memory lives on my friend. You were a great man.

I am grateful that, as a passenger in 2023, I can safely learn about our fallen servicemen who gave their lives to keep my family safer in the road. I am sorry for his family's loss but thankful you were here when you were. You deserve your highway, Officer.

I pass by your sign all the time driving from O'Hare to Elgin. There are not a lot of Asian Americans in the police force and I got curious. Thanks for your service.

I’m not even from Chicago and I don’t know this man. Just passing through and saw the memorial and decided to google info. In a Lyft by the way, not driving. Sad to see a life cut short. I have lost friends like your friends have lost you. Sad just thinking about it. Just wanted to thank you for your service and hope that you Rest In Peace and may your family know that there’s people out here who care about your passing. And that you are not forgotten.

Trooper Lim's memorial on I-90 inspired me to learn more about his life. What I read here reminds me of how much we owe law enforcement officers in Northern Illinois.

My family and I are kept safe by these brave troopers. I hope all of us ordinary civilians can learn to be more humble and respectful of one another in honor of the service of these brave men and women.
