Reflections for Police Officer Jerry Foster Philpot, II

We have all worked tireless in the pursuit of the same mission. No matter if it be one thousand years ago or one thousand years from now; we will work day and night, through the thick and thin, to help those pursue the same goal. You paid the ultimate price to help us all. You have not been forgotten; we will always remember.

Jerry,
You and I went to the Police Academy toegther, I started two weeks later than you. I remember the day you were taken away from this world and your family. Thoughts and prayers came in for your family to comfort, guide and care for them from everywhere. I believe that they were answered because your wife has taken this hurt and pain and used it to help others going through the same situation she went through. She has been an angel of mercy and an inspiration for so many and I am sure that you are so proud of her.

God Bless and Rest in Peace

I've sat in your families diner a few times and I've looked at your picture. Your family is very genuine, very generous, very kind, and always treat us with much respect. I can tell they miss you terribly, but at the same time they are incredibly proud of you. I pray that your wife, daughter, and entire family find peace in knowing that you are a hero, and that those of us who serve after you will not forget those that made the ultimate sacrifice. May you rest in peace, sir.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the fourteenth anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

I hold your family in my heart's embrace today and pray for their solace. To his wife Diane and daughter Katelyn, I share your anquish in losing a beloved family member which surely has to be life's greatest sorrow.

Monday is Memorial Day and 14 years since you were taken from Katelyn and I. She is a beautiful young lady with a Christian spirit. She looks like you. We miss you everyday and know that we are only a heartbeat away from seeing you again. We pray for healing and strength as the time passes. Not having daddy here to pick her up when she skins her knee, or teach her to throw a ball or ride a bike is so very hard. When she was little she would ask if GOD could just let you come to visit for a little while or make a staircase for us to visit. Now she just wishes you were here to talk to. We love you so much and miss you. Keep watch over us and know we will be together again in Heaven. Love Di and Katelyn

Jerry I think about you all the time. I remember you from going into Giants when I was working midnights and you always took good care of all the police officers. You wanted to be a officer so bad and you worked so hard to achieve that goal. We had a lot of good laughs. I will never forget you.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I remember you, your wife and beautiful daughter being at Softball City like it was yesterday. You were one of the bright "kids" (as my dad affectionally called you) at the 4th. My dad took your death so...hard and I think of you from time to time. Your wife has been so vigilant in making sure your legacy lives on in preventing such tragic incidents, like your death, from happening to other officers. You made the ultimate sacrafice. Much love from the Rufus L. Moore Jr. (retired investigator) family.

Jerry, you were always like a brother to me. For 18 years you kept me out of trouble and showung me the differance between what the neighborhood thought was a man, and what a true man is. I pray for your wife and daughter constantly. I still call and check up on your mother on occasion. I'll always love you Jerry.

I sadly remember that fateful night. I lived just two short blocks away on Rathbone. I was sitting by my window watching tv, when I heard what sounded like fire crackers. It wasn't until I heard and seen all the squad cars, that I knew something was wrong. My family and I moved over on Lafayette near Green in 97. My son who was just 4 at the time almost got shot playing on our balcony due to a bad drug deal. We made a decision to leave Detroit, and now live in Alabama. Unfortunetly, even small towns have drug problems anymore, so now we are heading for the boonies. This country is in a sad state, and I wish people would get past political correctness and start doing something about this spreading desease called "ghetto culture". I am truly worried about the future of my children.

Jerry and I became good friends when we worked together in Van Buren Twp. I moved on to Garden City and Jerry moved on to Detroit. At that time, Garden City did not issue vests and Detroit did. Knowing that I didn't have a vest, Jerry insisted on giving me his.

Jerry and I started police work at the same time, we got married at the same time and we both had beautiful daughters at the same time.

To this day, I still have the vest Jerry gave me and there's not a day that goes by where I don't think about him.

So often our Hero's are forgotten, but remember this Jerry, I will never forget you. Brothers Forever

Jerry, It is hard to believe that it has almost been 10 years since you left this world for a better place. But even though the time passes your memory still lives on. I think of you and your family often. I have not seen them in years but i am glad to hear they are doing well. I can't help but to think of the gold old days on the softball field and your fun smile. Thanks for the memories.
