"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

To Steve's family, we remember him. I was in the academy with Steve and I will always remember him as excited about the job, him family and his friends. I am sure he is proud of his sons and we have God's promise we will see him again.

I visited this page today (4/23/07) to link it to a tribute to fallen officers on the inertnet. I want to thank everybody who has remembered our sons, and taken the time to see them, especially Commander James Lopez and Sgt Abel Moreno. Although we may not be as visable as some, please know that Steve is with us everyday. Our loss was so great, that it still takes its toll on my sons. At 23, 18 & 17 they are grown and appreciate all who were there for them during their childhood. I knew Steve most of my life, 27 years go today, I was at Disneyland with him, we were 16, and we were celebrating his birthday. His mother Olga and brother Wayne would like me to thank all of you who do remember him. Godspeed to all Deputies & all Law enforcement.

I AM A STAFF INSTRUCTOR AT THE LA COUNTY SHERIFF'S ACADEMY. A YEAR AGO WE STARTED DEDICATING RECRUIT CLASSES TO FALLEN DEPUTIES OR OFFICERS. MY LAST CLASS, CLASS #354 DEDICATED THEIR CLASS TO DEPUTY STEPHEN BLAIR. THEY PUT TOGETHER AN OUTSTANDING VIDEO PRESENTATION. DEPUTY BLAIR'S WIDOW, DANA BLAIR, CAME AND VISTED THE CLASS AND THANKED THEM FOR REMEMBERING HIM. THEY WERE VERY HONORED, AS WERE WE, THE STAFF, THAT SHE TOOK THE TIME TO FLY HERE AND PERSONALLY THANK THEM. THIS IS OUR WAY OF KEEPING THEIR MEMORIES ALIVE AND LETTING THEM KNOW, THEY WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!

Steve, It has been 11 years now. Many seem to have forgotten, but know that you live on in the hearts and minds of many. I stay in touch with Dana, she lives near by. She has her struggles but is a strong woman. To your sons--Your Father is a HERO. Not because of how he died, but because of how he lived! Make him proud.

I'm 22 years old now, and I have missed having my dad with me for 11 years. I remember the best years with you, Christmas--you and mom would always get the biggest tree in the lot, you guys always made those years so special. Joey, Mikey and I miss you,we know that you are looking out for us. I WAS IN THE LOCKER ROOM TODAY GETTING DRESSED WHEN I DECIDED TO GO OVER TO STEVE'S LOCKER. I SAT ON THE BENCH AND READ THE PLAQUE THAT WAS PLACED THERE IN STEVE'S HONOR. I HAVE READ IT BEFORE MANY TIMES BUT EACH TIME FEELS LIKE THE FIRST. I HEARD THE RADIO TRAFFIC ON THE NEARBY SPEAKER; 245 NOW, UNITS ACKING THE CALL, ROLLING CODE 3, ETC. THE KIND OF CALL THAT CENTURY DEPUTIES LIVE FOR. I WAS SADDENED TO SIT IN FRONT OF STEVE'S LOCKER, TO READ THE WORDS WRITTEN BY HIS FRIENDS. BUT THEN AS THE DRAMA UNFOLDED ON THE RADIO, UNITS GETTING ON THE PATCH, THE ENEMY WHICH WE FIGHT EVERYDAY ATTEMPTING TO MAKE GOOD HIS ESCAPE IT SUDDENLY OCCURED TO ME THAT THE WORK THAT STEVE DID IS BEING CARRIED ON BY THE DEPUTIES 10-8 TODAY. THE WORK EHTIC, THE DRIVE, THE EXAMPLE THAT STEVE BLAIR AND MANY LIKE HIM SET IS STILL BEING FOLLOWED. AND BECAUSE OF THAT EXAMPLE, AT LEAST IN MY MIND, STEVE IS NOT AND NEVER WILL BE FORGOTTEN.

Hey Steve - I visited you a while back, I can't beleive it's been 10 years now that you've been gone. I remeber sharing a laugh in the locker room and getting spanked with calls when we worked 251E for a month in 1990. You are missed, but not forgotten. God Bless,
