Reflections for Patrolman Marion League

I discovered last year that Officer League was my great grandfather. I grew up knowing his son, George, as an uncle who was close to my mother. I spent 27 years as a police officer in East St. Louis knowing the story of Marion League but not knowing I was his legacy.

Patrolman League's son George Oliver was my uncle, married to my aunt, Thelma Beatrice Murray Jones, for more than 50 years. George, born in 1898, spoke of his father's death and what the loss meant to his family.

All honor to the people who risk their lives and the security of their families' futures in the name of the public good.

My great grandmother lost her husband, and my grandfather and his siblings lost their father, my mother and her brothers never got to enjoy their grandfather, and all of us beyond were robbed of any wonderful stories about Marion League.
All we have of him is pretty much what the report states.
He was killed doing his job, protecting and serving others.
This is the same for all who have lost family members and love ones in the line of duty.
We miss what we know, but we'll never know what we missed.
