Family, Friends & Fellow Officers Remember...

Jimbo-----------I'll never forget that day in November. I was at home in Niles, visiting my parents and they had CNN on TV. (At home I never watched CNN) I was doing something else and I heard "Officer James Guelff" and I stopped and yelled at my mom, "That's Jimbo, that's Nanners brother!!!" I hadn't even talked to Nan in a few years, it was like it was mean't to be that I heard that, and I just fell. I couldn't believe it. I remembered those days in SLO when I was a 20 year old kid from Michigan and you were this really cool "california guy with the long, blonde pony tail!" You were my roomates brother, and I had such a crush on you! I called Nan immediately, and she was more than distraught. I'll never forget it as long as I live. I also saw the episode of San Francisco SWAT, and I told Nanner about it. We keep in touch, as much as anyone can with Nanner! I talk to her about once every few years, but I think of her often. I remember Milo too, what a crush I had on him. I know it's crazy I'm talking to you like your there, but I guess when you haven't seen someone in so many years, I can still wish that you are still there, even though I know you aren't. What I really want to say, and what I know is that you are a hero! Nanner loves you so much!! I remember you fondly, and I wish I could someday meet your kids, because I know they must be so great!

Tomorrow will be 14 years since you were taken from your loved ones and your family at Northern Station. Your memory still lives on each and every day. You will never be forgotten nor will your heroic act of giving your own life to save others. I am confident that you are watching over each and every officer as they start their shift and making sure they go home safe. That night we lost a true hero but we all gained a guardian angel.

Officer Guelff became a California cop, the same year I did.

When he was killed, as many of us, he was a single father.

On that fateful day in 1994, the gunman was armed with two assault rifles, an Uzi automatic pistol, a Colt .45 and a Glock 9mm pistol. Meanwhile, Officer Guelff was armed with his department-issued six-shooter revolver, which he emptied at the gunman before being shot.

As a result of his tragic death, the James Guelff Body Armor Act was introduced by Senator Diane Feinstein.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Officer Guelff, I just saw on tv about how you sadly lost your life in the line of duty. Although I did not know you, I am saddened by what happened on that November morning. From what was said, you were a highly respected officer. May God bless you and may you watch over all those who serve and protect.

On this the eleventh anniversary of your tragic death, please know that your valor and dedication are not forgotten. Your memory is still revered for your heroic acts that culminated in your brutal murder.

May your family continue to be supported by their law enforcement family, and other police survivors.
