Reflections for Trooper Paul L. Hutchins

Rest in peace always knowing that your service and sacrifice will never, ever be forgotten by your law enforcement brethren.

Paul:

On August 29, 2015 it will be 30 years since you were taken from us. We were friends, neighbors, and fellow troopers. We worked at together at Posts 24 (New Baltimore) and 29 (Detroit). Sometimes we would ride together to work, talking Detroit baseball, our next pass days and about "Doin' Time at Post 29."

I remember you riding your new motorcycle over to my house to see our new born son - who is now 30 years old and a Michigan State Trooper as well.

Unfortunately, I will never forget August 28, 1985. You took the day off from the afternoon shift. It was a warm summer evening. After work some of us on afternoons stopped at Casey's bar by Tiger Stadium to have a beer. Shortly after we got there our shift supervisor, John Appicelli called us over by the front window and advised us you had been shot. We rushed over to Detroit Receiving Hospital where the doctor huddled us into a room and after beating around the bush, he advised us that due to your severe injuries, it was just a matter of time.......I asked the doctor to see you and I remember how helpless I felt that there was nothing I could do to help a fellow trooper, a hero, a friend who was dying.

Even though I had the honor to be one of your pallbearers, your funeral was a blur. Everything thing we did that day was final - there was no going back, no do overs. A friend and great trooper was laid to rest.....

I hope you know Lynne and I visit you every August 29th. And, we will continue until we meet again.

May God and St. Michael watch over you.

Dear Paul, I just received the news that your father has just passed away. I remember at your funeral how terrible it was for your father - a retired Michigan Trooper to bury his son. Now heaven will have two additional angels to watch over his kingdom. This life passes us by in a blink of an eye. A special prayer for you and your father, may you enjoy each others company. I salute you both! Tpr. Paul Hutchins and Tpr. Robert Hutchins, R.I.P. - a special prayer for your families too.

Trooper Paul L. Hutchins,

I am saddened by the circumstances of your death. Who among us that wears a badge has not imagined himself being confronted in the manner that you were on the day you died. To have another with you at the time adds to the anguish and the stress of the situation as you stived to protect this companion knowing what could occur. You took measures to insure that your companion was safe from the line of fire and confronted the scoundrels head on. It took a tremendous amount of courage to act and only our Creator can account for the outcome. I cannot. I only feel anxious and thoughts of rage swell inside me. Thoughts of those who believe that only what they see on television and movies, and how such situations almost always protray us as overcoming impossible odds. Thoughts of those who demand that an officer be fired on before resosrting to use of his most lethal weapon. Thoughts of how people unfairly crticize and condemn the manner in which we do our job. And thoughts of how law officers everywhere, inspite of all this, continue to act as fine soldiers of the law.

I have no doubt that you have joined that legion of law officers who gave their lives in service to mankind. That they have greeted you with open arms, and received you among them as the hero that you are. Further, I have no doubt that since you followed the Creator's commandment to be the servant of others you will join them on the last great day and march together through the gates of Heaven. Well done, trooper...well done.

Wow! Such bravery and courage, but I really feel for your companion who had
to endure watching you take your last breath. At least the thugs got a long
prison term. Sometimes officers die and the murderer gets a slap on the hand. It is an injustice for everyone. Although it didn't bring you back, I feel like justice was done in your case and I wish the courts were tougher on the criminals. Thank you so much for serving. The world could use more men like you!

POLICE OFFICER
PHILA PA

February 3, 2008

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

While browsing through the all-too-many memorial pages of officers killed in the line of duty, I came across yours. My God, you are truly a hero, as another person prior to me wrote. You risked and gave your life to save another. It isn't fair that these senseless killings have continued. It is my prayer that they end, but it has been said and read before - God is choosing the finest officers to be by His side in heaven. Thank you for the ultimate sacrifice you made. I will never forget what I just read here in your memorials. God bless your soul, rest peacefully.

Trooper Hutchins, I remember the day you were killed. I used to go down to Hart Plaza as a teenager and I was only one year out of highschool when you encountered members of the "Be Like Gang."

To this day I still talk about the senseless tragedy that befell you with my brother. I'm glad the people responsible will never know another day of freedom to victimize helpless people.

I used to correspond with your cousin, but we've since lost touch. I trust that your family is well.

Rest in Peace.

SA Darin L. Paul

Paul, I met you only two weeks before your untimely death. My only regret is that we didn't have more time to become better friends. I recall that you were quiet and humble. Those being traits of the Code Of The Samurai, which also is in the very foundation of each Michigan State Trooper. Paul, you are a warrior, and will sorely be missed. Rest in peace BROTHER!
