Police Corporal Matt Lyons (Historian)
Oceanside Police Department, Cal

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Dear Jackie,
Happy Birthday in heaven. Can't believe you would be 57 if you were living here on earth. I sure am glad there will be no age in heaven.
Chris, Ashlyn and Jackson are doing fine. Jackson was telling me about his Papaw Daniel the other night. He said he was living in heaven with Jesus. I told him he was exactly right.
Still loving and missing you.

Hey Jackie,
Thinking about you today. Chris is now engaged to be married in May. He has fallen in love with a beautiful girl named Amy. She is so good for Chris. They are faithful in their church which makes me so proud. Christ needs to be the center of their marriage just like he was ours.
Still miss and love you!

Dear Jackie,

Ashlyn told me she was getting a tatoo and I was upset and discouraged her. She is a grown woman and of course didn't listen to mama.

When I saw the tatoo, I was amazed. It was beautiful. She has a tatoo of your badge with angel wings coming out of it.
I couldn't believe the detail it has. She put your initials in the center. She still misses her dad and I do too.

Still love and miss you,
Janice

Hey Jackie,
It's May again. May is a very emotional month for me. Of course it is the Memorial for Fallen Law Enforcement Officers. We are going to Raleigh again this year with 1st Sgt. Johnny Leonard. It is always a blessing to go with him. He is the officer that gave his heart to Jesus, partially the live you lived and your funeral.
These memorials are very important and it is good to know that our loved ones are not forgotten, but it also brings back alot of memories.
May is my birthday month also. I will never forget my favorite birthday. We were broke and when I got home from work that night, you had borrowed candles from your mom and had fixed supper (beans and corn) and we ate by candlelight. You were always so thoughtful.

Still love and miss you,
Janice

To Officer Daniels Family,

I am extremely touched that you have not forgotten your beloved after so many years. I only pray that I mean that much to my family. He seemed like a very loving father and husband. I know that he is in heaven waiting for the day where he can give yall a big ole hug and kiss and hold your hand.

To Officer Daniels,

I want to thank you for being that stranded motorists beacon of light on that dark night, for being that battered womens shoulder to cry on, for being that fathers saviour when he was out in the middle of the night looking for his daughter who did not come home the night before. Thank you for serving all of humanity even though most of us dont really deserve it.

Jackie,

Wanted to let you know how proud I am of Chris. He is attending church regularly now. Bernie Loos, who used to work with you in Concord is his Sunday School teacher. In Proverbs, it says "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he won't depart from it." HOW TRUE!!

Ashlyn and Jackson are still doing well. I wish you could be here and spend time with Jackson. He is so much fun! Ashlyn is such a good mother.

Sometimes we think life is unfair and yes it is. I think often of the time (24 yrs) that we had together. Please know that I still love and miss you very much.

Jackie,
Just wanted to say "Happy Birthday in Heaven". October 21 would have been your 56th birthday. I often wonder what it would be like if you were still here. I wonder if your beautiful black hair would have gray. (Is that crazy or what?) I would love to see you interaction with our grandson, Jackson. He is so much fun!

Often I share the poem you wrote me the day before you died. I am so thankful I have that! This is the poem:

Sitting here in the rain with nothing to do,
My mind wanders back to when I married you.
That was one othe biggest days of my life,
When you took the vow to become my lovely wife.
Our early married life, was like the rolling tide,
but my love for you never died.

For the first twenty one years, you did not tell,
but at times, I put you through "living hell"
I love you so much for putting up with me
and telling me things that I would later see.

I could never express what you mean to me but I pray
that my actions you will see. How fortunate I am to have you as my wife
That I would fight for you and give up my life.

You prayed for my when I misbehaved and I know that you played a big part in me getting saved.
On September 3, 1991, I met the master, "Jesus Christ" God's Son.
He has changed my life and I can really say
He has changed my darkest nights into the brightest days.
This come from the heart, From me to you

If we keep Jesus in our heart, He will always see us through.

We will be together in Heaven someday!!!
7/27/1994 JLD

I thank God everday for the priveledge I had to be married to you for 24 years. I am also thankful that yes, we will be together in Heaven someday!!!

Love you still,
