Here is one of my most favored ancestors. It's so wonderful to see family I've never met post on grandpa Gum. Law enforcement runs in our blood! My grandmother was Anna Howard. RIP Sir

I remember my Dad telling about Gum Howard being shot in the
line of duty. I have a copy of the newspaper, given to me by
our cousin Clark Gray.

Montgomery was taken to a nearby home where he died early the next morning. He was buried on a hill behind the Elisha Adkins home (his Father-in-Law) at the Rowan/Elliott County line. His hadcuffs are in the posession of one of his Great-Great Grandaughters.

Jacob Montgomery Howard is my son's great grandfather. I always heard him called Gum Howard. Montgomery Howard First Law Officer killed in the line of duty in Elliott CountyAnother Killing! That was the headline that appeared in a December 1885 issue of the Licking Valley Scorcher, a Morgan County newspaper. The story began: "Last Saturday about twelve o'clock two men and a woman accompanied by a man on horseback who gave his name asTipton, drove up to A. J. Amyx's on North Fork in the county and stopped apparently for dinner. In a few moments, Montgomery Howard, aConstable of Elliott County, accompanied by two men by the name of Fraley rode up and inquired of the man on horseback if his name wasnot Tipton. The party addressed responded in the affirmative, and when Howard told them that he wanted him, Tipton drew a revolver and fired at Howard, the ball passing through the body just above the hips, and another shot struck him in the back. Howard died about 2 o'clockSunday morning."The newspaper account continued: "Howard and his men claimed that Tipton was an outlaw, there being reward offered for his capture,he then being on the dodge from the authorities. Tipton made his escape to the woods at once and is now at large. Several squads of men have been scouring the county for the murderer, but as yet without avail. His wife claimed they were from Letcher County and added that her husband would not be taken alive. He evidently has gone back to his native home.""Montgomery 'Gum' Howard was the first Elliott County officer to die in the line of duty. Elliott County was created in 1869." This is from the newspaper article on him. He was shot in the back.

I was told by an old timer many years ago that Gum was on the trail of an outlaw and rode into a town (Might have been Wrigley) As he rode into a crowd of people and named the man he was looking for his horse turned around and when it did the outlaw shot him in the back. He was taken to a near by house where he loudly called upon the Lord all night until he died. Suposedly his brother Asberry spent a good part of his life looking for the shooter to no avail

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 126th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

I remember my father petitioning to have Jacob Montgomery Howard's name added to the memorial for fallen police officers when I was a little girl. I'm not sure exactly how I am related to this man, but I am proud to be a descendant of a fallen hero.

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003). Unfortunately, I had to add the name of another friend recently. Deputy Jeffery Hewitt, Buncombe County (NC) Sheriff’s Department, E.O.W. April 4, 2004.

I want to honor all of those who gave their life in the line of duty. Although your death was many many years ago, you are still a hero.

God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.
