Rest In Peace Brother. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. You died protecting others without regard for yourself, you are a hero.

Your sacrifice, sir, will never be forgotten by those of us whose families were affected by the flu epidemic. My grandmother, Mary Estelle Jefferson, also died in 1918 after tending to people who were ill in her neighborhood. Worldwide the Spanish Flu killed millions of people.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 91rst anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Rest In Peace

He was my grandfather (I am daughter of his son Walter, Jr.) Dad was very young when he passed but was always proud of his law enforcement roots. I am so proud to have a true heroe in my family. Because of him, someone else survived.

Walter Holcomb is my grandfather. I wish I could have known him. A newspaper account of his death (titled, "POLICE ATHLETE CALLED BY DEATH,") said "He was reputed to be the strongest man in the department and had a reputation for absolute fearlessness. Chief McMullen declared today that in the death of Holcomb he lost one of the best men on the force." Walter left behind his wife Louise, daughter Lillian and his son Walter Jr. who retired from the military police. His brother Ray was also an officer of the San Diego Police. At the time of his death his family lived at 2802 Imperial Avenue.

I was surprised to find this memorial and want to thank those responsible.
