Reflections for Patrolman James J. Hodgdon, III

Patrolman Hodgdon, it has been 56 years since you were taken from us. What an amazing legacy of service to the Commonwealth and country you and your family have provided. Your service may not have been long, but you have served a full career in perpetuity.

New England law enforcement has continued to thrive, learn and become safer due to the traditions and sacrifices you, your family, and many others have made for us. Thank you for your law enforcement service.

This is not a special day of remembrance for you, but it doesn’t have to be because every day you are honored and not forgotten by those who loved you, by the law enforcement community, and by survivors of fallen officers. You gave your young life for your community and your supreme sacrifice is recognized and honored by those who understand what that means.

It’s been 51 years since the last time I saw you. I remember you gave me a ride to the Pool Variety Broadway & Walnut St in Somerville. You were just going back to work from a weeks vacation, first a detail at the Lexington High School Dance then you were going to work at midnight. Little did I know when you dropped me off it would be the last time i’d See you alive.
Just want you to know your 2 month old son Sean is a Lt. on the Mass State Police and your almost 2 year old son is a Capt. on the Lowell Police in Lowell Mass.
it’s been hard at times since we lost you and dad 2 months a part. We go to the cemetery often to visit you and the family.
Sorry it took all this time to leave a reflection but it’s hard trying to find the right words. You were cheated out of a full life but the only positive part of your passing is you died doing what you love to do. The rest of our family followed in youryand dads foot steps.

Until We Meet Again

Today is the 48th anniversary of your passing. It is heartwarming as well as heart breaking to read reflections left by the family members of those who have gone before us. Heartbreaking in that they show how much you are missed and yet heartwarming to see that they have made a point of leaving one.

Not everyone does leave reflections for ancestors who left this world too early, and the reasons vary widely, from not knowing about this website, to not being able to type out a memory or a thought. No doubt reliving the tragic events can be traumatic. I think we can all understand that, but when family and friends DO post something here, its just another way for those of us still out here to see the human side, the personal side of that person we are trying to honor. I salute those family members who have left something here for Patrolman Hodgdon. God Bless you.

And God Bless you as well Patrolman Hodgdon as I'm sure he has, Brother. I have no doubt you've watched your sons grow and have shown enormous pride as you watched them follow in your footsteps.

Dad,
Tomorrow your grandson Sean leaves for Air Force basic training, how I wish you were here to see the birth of Sean and have had the opportunity to see him grow into the man he has today. You would be so proud of him as I am.

There is not a day that you are not thought of or loved. You have left a proud legacy within your five grandchildren and they all strive to make you proud.

Love your son,
Sean
