Reflections for Trooper Jerry Lynn Hines

The first contact I had with Jerry was when I was first hired and our department mail was mistakenly mixed up, he got my expense account check and cashed it, he sent me a nice note and apoligized for the mix up and signed it cousin. Latter we met at inservice training and after discussing family, we discouvered we were distant cousins. We had made plans for Jerry to attend a Hines family reunion when fate stepped in. Although Jerry didn`t get to attend that reunion he was certainly known by every one there when the reunion was over. I made sure of that. Jerry was a good Trooper, he died as a hero and a gentleman what more can you ask for.

Although I never had the opportunity to know you, my father did. Seventeen years later you are still remembered. Thank you for your service as one of Virginia's finest. May you rest in peace.

MAY GOD BLESS THIS HERO AND HIS FAMILY. YOU DIED NOT IN VAIN MY BROTHER. GONE BUT NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN. REST IN PEACE MY BROTHER IN BLUE.

JEFFERSON POLICE DEPT,S.C.

I noticed on this reflections page and that of another Trooper, the saying of "blue and gray pride". It suddenly struck me that the colors of a VSP Trooper's uniform is blue and gray. It also struck me as ironic, in that Jerry Hines was the First Sergeant of the Infantry company in Lexington, VA. His shoulder patch was the blue and gray design of the 29th Infantry Division.

I should know because I'm in that company. The National Guard Armory in Lexington is named the Jerry Hines Memorial Armory in his memory. His picture is in the lobby of the Armory, and the Virginia State Police annually awards the Jerry Hines award to our top soldier. Two of the last three recipients have been cops.

"Top", I never knew you, but many in the unit did. We are all in Cuba right now, serving in the War on Terror.

Rest easy...

Police Officer II J. Harding
Richmond, Virginia Police Dept.

Your a slab of that Interstate 81. You saved countless lives and prevented injuries as a result of your commitment to excellence regarding public safety. Your killer got his and time to ponder on it.

Thanks Trooper

Rest in peace. Blue and Grey pride combined!!
