Dear Sherriff Gurule,

My parents are the Gurules from Holtville, CA. Impersonating veterans of the armed forces here in Albuquerque, NM.

They are actually child abusers and I would like to thank you for not smearing a good family name.

I'm sorry to lose an actual upstanding and honorable man like you.

Leo,
Two days ago was the 35th anniversary of your murder. I will never forget hearing so many sirens that summer evening never dreaming that those sirens were for you. You were a good friend to me and my ex-husband and you loved your bride and children. I still look at the pictures of your wedding to Beverly as we were the best man and maid of honor for you both. Rest in peace my dear friend and remember that you will live on in the hearts of those who cared about you.

My son now works for the Santa Fe Sheriff's Department, first as a deputy and now as a detective. I know the ever-present worry relatives have knowing that their loved ones put their lives on the line every day. My thoughts and prayers remain with you. Thank you for being our friend.

God Bless You,
Debbie Brandle

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Uncle Leo,

You have been greatly missed over the past 25 years. I can't believe it has been that long already - it seems at times that it was only yesterday that it happend.

You left behind a great legacy, your widow went on to be the first female police chief in Santa Fe's history because of you and her feelings that Santa Fe lost a great law enforcement officers. Most of our family still works in law enforcement still, your niece proudly walk into your building and see your picture everyday. Now you have a nephew that is a deputy for Santa Fe County along with our other cousins. Please watch over them protecting them and be their extra eyes for them.

Not a day goes by that I don't think of you or look at your picture that I have of you in my office. I LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU SO MUCH and often find myself thinking of how our lives would of been if that fateful day in June had not happened. Tell everyone hi for us that is there with you in Heaven.

Love Always - Carmella
