Carlos
Thanks for your service to the NHP and to the citizens of Nevada. I just taught two classes at the Nevada DPS Academy yesterday and I saw your picture on the wall. I was reminded of your ultimate sacrifice. After you were shot, way back I was our SWAT Commander. Our entire SWAT team volunteered to pursue the suspect, who was out on foot in Dixie Valley. Our team (Washoe County Sheriff) was scheduled to go to the field to assist, but other officers from Reno PD and allied agencies caught the suspect before we got the chance. Our regional law enforcement community was tight knit in those days and your death touched us all. I did not know you but knew many troopers who did and they all spoke highly of you. Thanks for your sacrifice. The suspect is on death row and isn't going anywhere.

Carlos (SGT Borland),

You were "one of a kind." I'm amazed to read that I am not the only person to know that you are a guardian angel still watching over us, guiding those in need, and protecting the helpless. Thank you for coming to me in my dreams. Thank you for the unforgettable fun memories at Ft. Hood. I have not forgotten them.

I heard about your death while I was in college from SGT Mike Ortiz. He is no longer on this earth either, but I'm sure you are both in each others good company in Paradise. I was never able to send my condolences to your parents and sister, but I pray they are able to read this and feel my love, peace and gratefulness for their beautiful soul--Carlos.

I am no longer a Chinook mechanic, nor an AG Army Officer, but I do think of you when I see our "flying buses" soaring high!

I have been thinking that I should plan a trip to see and honor your resting place, amigo. God bless you, your familia, your fellow brothers and sisters in law enforcement, and all of those that miss you as much as I have. Adios, amigo.

I was Region II dispatcher that night working the graveyard shift alone. I sent Diana and Kathy home when I came on duty. My heart had been ripped out of my chest! Carlos had been shot in the head, and was on life support. The call came in from the hospital over the radio, Carlos was in the arms of the Angels. Every phone line into dispatch was lit up from every major news agency in the country! I was overwhelmed! Sgt Sorensen and I looked up at each other, and instantly decided to notify every Trooper in our region that Carlos was gone. We didn’t want any of our guys hearing on the national news first. I cried or choked up on ever call. Worst night of my life! I spent several months working with Carlos, most love able guy ever. He was truly an Angel amongst us. He was known locally in Lovelock for his love and generosity to strangers. RIP my Buddy

Carlos, you were an academy classmate I trained with years ago. I remember you working Lovelock while I worked Reno. I was in Hawaii with my wife when you were killed and your murderer was captured. I learned of what happened from a dispatcher when I returned. I wrote your story in the Nevada trooper magazine because I was not there to help capture your assailant. I regret not being there for you. I have since retired from law enforcement but have not forgotten your sacrifice. You will always be remembered in honor.

You are missed my friend - we served well together back in 1991. I frequently think of the time spent on dirt bikes riding thru the Texas desert. Thanks for the great laughs and memories.

Sweet Carlos - I think of you so very often, my friend. Doesn’t seem possible that you’ve been gone so long. But you are always so close in thought and memory to me and so many others. A box of cards and letters I went through a few months ago and in it were some from you. You always wrote the best notes-funny and thoughtful. So much love...you are greatly missed in this life.

Carlos,
So many years have passed and some many amazing and not so amazing thing have happened that I didn’t get to share with you. I have boxes of letter and a shirt your mom let me have after the funeral that have survived two divorces and the death of my oldest son who you never got to meet.
Today is Memorial Day and I’m on my way to visit you at Arlington, as I’ve done every year since you were taken from us. You were my best friend and there’s not a day that I don’t think about you or talk to you, if just to update you on my crazy life.
You were an amazing man, caring, kind hearted, thoughtful, loving and you had the best printing I’d ever seen. I remember in basic training you sent me a letter almost every week if not more and even sent me stuff to get me in trouble(just for fun of course)
Your sacrifices to your “new” country and the State of Nevada are never forgotten.
I will love you forever

It's hard for me realising that my Eindhoven (The Netherlands) BMX friend Carlos (Swinkels) Borland has been dead for the length of his age, 25 years on December 1 2018. Carlos was a cool, very handsome kid back then when he was competing in BMX in The Netherlands and Europe (1979-1984). His death came as a big shock and the circumstances of his death make it that much more tragic. I will always remember him for his great smile, bright personality and true sportmanship.

I worked with Carlos' father at a gold mine for a couple years. I had no idea they were related until I asked. Carlos looked a lot like his dad. I was traveling I-80 that night to Reno. I had been home in Reno when the incident occurred. I was dreaming of working for the NHP at the time. I was 19 years old then. I remember cutting the article out of the paper and saving it and feeling so sad. Any time I passed the cross that used to stand at mile marker 108 (I think it was), I would salute Trooper Borland. It's something I have never forgotten any time I am on that stretch of road after all these years.

Carlos, as we honor two Alaska State Troopers who lost their lives in the line of duty this past week, I still have tears for you. I fondly remember attending the first Academy that SO's and Troopers were together in Carson City. We were academic competitors and always encouraging each other. You have stayed in my heart all these years. I will never forget you. Prayers to your family.

I saw an old episode of Real Stories of the Highway Patrol today and they talked about your tragic murder. I felt like I had to leave this reflection. It saddened me because the day you were tragically taken from us all, I celebrated a birthday. I learned you were a sergeant in the Army, like myself. I pray time has brought peace to your family and co-workers since this incident occurred. God bless all those who mourn your passing. I pray the man who committed this act gets the justice he deserves....
