I am not sure why I have never seen these comments before today, on the 31st anniversary of my dad’s death. The day we will have calling hours for my sister in law, Helaine - retired Vermont State Police Detective Sargent, after her battle with ALS. But these kind words about my dad are good for my soul. He is missed every day. May he, my sister Angie and Helaine be together, and Rest In Peace.

His granddaughter, Kaleigh, got married on Saturday. It has been a gray, wet spring here in the north east. On Saturday the weather was perfect. I will always believe he made the sun shine upon her on her special day. We wish he could have been here in more than just spirit, but the sun certainly was nice.

Without a doubt, one of the finest people I ever had the pleasure of working with. The Chief of Police in Ludlow VT when I first met him, Gene went to work for DLC, and was responsible for Rutland County. Gene, Brian Abbey myself and other troopers were at the Rutland Hospital, enjoying coffee just prior to his accident, as he was headed home for the evening. Truly one if not the saddest moments of my carrer with the VSP, If not the saddest call out of my career.

I fondly remember when Officer Gene Gaiotti worked for the police department in Manchester, Vermont. He was respected by all of our citizens and an upstanding member of our community. You are truly missed.

He was once chief of police in Ludlow,VT. He hired me as a young patrolman. He was the best boss I ever had. After he left Ludlow,so did I. He then helped me to get hired by the Vt state police. He was a great family man, loving husband and father. I'll always remember his laugh,Ipray for him and his family every day. Take care Chief

Time may have passed but you are not forgotten. I believe as long as someone remembers you or speaks your name, you are still with us.
Thank you for your heroism.

Gene was a big man with a big heart. He was a devoted husband and family man as well and very proud of his children. Gene enjoyed working in his huge garden every summer and once boasted that he had 48 tomato plants to ensure that he had enough tomatoes for his homemade spaghetti sauce! Thinking of his entire family today.

I remember that morning. On my way to work for 5 A.M. met a State Boy ...on the way to Gene's house. When I got to N Clarendon...foggggy..and the road was sparkley..(Glass I later learned). Upon coming home the Men folk were in the garage and told me what had happened. It is just one of those days that stay with you forever.

With out question one of the nicest guys that I had met in law enforcement. A big guy who always had your back. As you can see in the photo, Gene had a great smile and infectious laugh. He was always in a place that he could make you have a better day if you were feeling down. He left us way too soon. No one could believe he was gone but never will be forgotten. I can still hear his laugh. It rang through the walls of the Rutland Barracks, and it probably still does. He is probably keeping heaven in a uproar this very minute. Thanks for the memories!

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 23rd anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

I pray for solace for all those that call you beloved for I know both the pain and pride are forever. I thank them for sharing their memories of you through their reflections.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
