Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Rudolph P. Thomas, Jr.

Dearest Rudy..
There are so many memories of the three of us... You, Ressy and me, in grandma's kitchen, looking out the window at the courtyard behind Pennsylvania Avenue. Hanging out on the stoop at Decatur Street (cause we weren supposed to leave the gate(!)) . So much fun, getting into so much trouble. Your laughter is part of the soundtack of my life and I miss you terribly.Your loss affects us all to this day. A piece of our hearts left with you and will always be with you. So much has happened Rudy... I miss you and wish you were here. We were supposed to get old together! I love and miss you Rudy, with all my heart..

To a person i call friend,i have often thought about you through all those years. We met at Merrill Lynch (Wells Fargo) that was way back in 1986,we both talked about doing things in the world. And yes we even talked about being policemen, you one day didn't report back to work, and i asked our supervisor at the time (Michael) where were you.He said you had left the job,i had no number,it happen kind of fast. But i still wondered about you, until one day i learned what had happen in the papers. You were always a good person with a warm smile,i am still mad at the person who did what he did it was uncalled for.You did not deserve it at all.People like you Thomas will always be missed i had known you to be concern about people and liked to help out all the time that's what i remember the most, may God bless you and shine his ever lasting light upon you for you are surely to be missed and not forgotten...

Hey Rudy, You just popped into my head today out of the blue. I googled your name and came across this site. I remember when we used to ride the train together on our way to the academy with those big dreams of changing the world and fighting crime. Then we both got assigned to PSA 3. You were always such a pleasant guy with that wonderful smile that would light up the room. Just wanted to say that you are truly missed and still thought of. Rest in Peace Brother.

We laugh and talk about you ALL the time; but today, especially today, we need you to give Officer MacPhail a big hug and tell him we appreciate his service.

When you're done, gather up grandma and grandpa, Uncle Elon, Uncle Al, Uncle Georgie, Aunt Elaine and Aunt Noreen; walk over to those pearly gates and welcome Troy Davis.

Rudy, You are the reason that I chose a career in Law Enforcement, I know that when I put my uniform on, and go to work, that you are my Guardian Angel. You are Loved and Missed by many. I often reflect on the many conversations we had in Marcy PJ"s and you always ended them with "stay out of trouble." you were a mentor to so many. Surprisingly me and all of my close friends winded up getting jobs in the Police Dept, Corrections, and the FBI. Its been 18 years, and you will Never be Forgotten, Rest in Peace, My Brother, My Friend. The 4th of July has Never been the same since.......

Someone else has already said it. But it is good to see your face again. I'll remember that day when we learned-- all of us stunned. We all were together just the night beofre at an 85. Do or die in Bed-Sty isn't that what you used to say. You were and still are the best !!!!We will meet again soon. May God keep you.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Dear Rudy,
Its been a long time but I still think of you. I was the first female officer you took out for feild training and you made me feel so special of that fact. I still reminisce about how goofy we acted with one another and my heart still gets heavy on my birthday because I know yours is the very next day. I see your mom sometimes and she told me about this site, for that I'm greatful, Thank you Ms. Joyce. I'd like to give a shout out to my PSA#3 family, LOMO is still around. Until next time Rudy RIP

Every time I hear Whitney Houston's "I will always love you" I think of you and your partner singing horribly. You guys did great in community. It is wonderful to be able to write to you after all these years, and I am still missing you... after all these years!

Dear Rudy,

It was great to find this site and see your face again after all these years. As your squad Sergeant in PSA 3 I was devastated to learn I was missing a (great) man.

Your action and sacrifice made me proud to work with you and your great smile and personal warmth made me glad to come to work everyday, looking forward to smiling with you. I can’t believe it’s been 14 years - I can still see us at the Marcy Desk.

I always promised myself that someday I would do something to make sure you’re remembered. I’m glad to see I’m with many who know you too and feel the same way.

Since retiring in ’02 and starting a new career in Real Estate & Finance, I’ve committed myself to create the Rudolf Thomas Annual Memorial Scholarship Fund, to carry forth your committment to community. I hope that others visiting this page will contact me to ensure your never-ending spirit may be brought forward to others not fortunate enough to know you personally.

You remain a great inspiration to me and I think of you often. Rest in Peace.

Rudy, the memories are still so vivid. Everytime I drive down Decatur St. I look at that house and think about all of the fun we used to have there. Although I was much younger than y'all I still remember trying to keep up with you, Rozzy and Reesie. I know Grandma is up there taking care of her favorite boy. Give her and Grandpa a kiss from me and tell her to save me some coo-coo and flying fish. Kee Quie......
