I will never forget you, Richard. I remember you as the best of the best, and when you passed away I was heartbroken. I can not forget that smile you always had when you walked up. It still hurts to think such a good guy could just be gone that quickly. I know you are wrapped in warmth, comfort, and the love of the Creator, and no pain or sorrow will ever touch you again.

I miss you Daddy. It doesn't seem that it's been so long ago that we lost you, but it has been almost 19 years. You would have been so proud of your children and grandchildren. I remember the day you had Heather and David together, they were just babies, but you were so proud of them. I love you and miss you so much.

To the family and loved ones of Lt. Richard Newman:

I wanted to honor and remember Richard today. Although I never had the privilege of meeting him, I feel as if I know him through the loving reflections left by friends. His valor and courage will never be forgotten.

I am so sorry that Richard was robbed of his life, but through his heroism and the profound sense of duty with which he lived his life, he made an immeasurable difference. May his spirit continue to soar and may his memory continue to inspire.

To his family, I am so sorry for your loss and know that your life was forever changed by the death of your beloved. I know that he is forever in your hearts. I wish for you that you are able to live the hopes and dreams he has for your life.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Richard gave to his community and the citizens of Louisana, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on February 19, 19.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Lt. Newman,

I will never forget the day I met you. I was a young civilian who was speeding in your City. You were firm, professional and polite. As a training officer for a police department, I tell officers every chance I get about you, so know that you did not die in vain. Rest In Peace, Brother.
