I had a POW bracelet since Bobby and I were in High School. I recently found out my POW had been located and his remains were returned home. When adding my "reflections" to that site, this site popped up. And I found Bobby.
I saw where Cy Avery posted a comment. I was in school with them as well. Bobby and I shared a love for a girl - Julie Bridges. For reasons I have forgotten, Julie chose me and I know if bothered Bobby a lot. We lost contact with each other over the next few years.
Julie and I married and were in Greece at the time of Bobby's accident. It it us very hard - especially being so far away and not being able to pay proper respects.
Bobby's tribute at the Security Police Museum at Lackland AFB should remain forever with all the great SPs we have lost.
To Bobby's family know I (& Julie) will never forget. He is thought of often, as several of my relatives have sought a career in the Air Force and I remind them of my time and the times of my friends.
We will meet again, someday, and we shall guard the gates once more. Our nation became a little weaker that day - but the Army of our Lord became so much stronger.
Ten-hut... Hand Salute. Rest.

I had no idea this site existed. I stumbled across it when looking for some information on my parents and grandparents.

A piece of my heart was torn away on March 18, 1979. Robert and I were to be married on May 22, 1979. I'll never forget that night. I just wanted to see him, but because Robert was burned so badly we were unable to view his body. It took me awhile to come to grips with what had happened. There were times when I thought I saw him on the street from afar or smelled his cologne. I just knew the government was trying to pull something off on us, but I knew better just didn't want to believe the truth.
Robert wanted to be Border Patrol Agent more than anything in the world. He was bound and determined to make it. He was studying Criminal Law at St Philips College to help facilitate it. Robert loved his country and was proud to serve it in anyway he could.
Thanks to his family and mine I was able to get through a very rough time. They allowed me to talk, laugh, smile and cry. For that I am grateful. I am sad that I lost touch with Robert's little girl and family. When I met my husband Robert's parents were happy and wished me well.
I know now that God has a reason for everything he does and that it is not for us to question why. He has a plan for all of us. His plan for Robert was completed here on earth. I will miss him always and wonder what would have been.

Many, many days I worked Gate #2 at the old Kelly AFB between 1980 and 1984. This was the location that Bob lost his life to a drunk driver. His life was not lost in vain because his memory kept many of us working that gate very conscious and aware of our surroundings. I wish I would have known Bob, everyone spoke so highly of him. May he Rest In Peace.

I went to school with Robert at Highlands High School. We knew each other from that time. I started working at Kelly AFB in December of 1978 and remember seeing him sometimes at the gate when I would come in to work. Never missed the chance to say hello and chat if nobody was behind me trying to get through the gate. They named a street in his honor out here at the base. (ROBERT DOVER ST) I still work here and think of him whenever I'm on HIS street. To Dear Laura, he was a heck of a nice guy and always liked him. Thinking of you and your loved ones on this day. I also know what it is like to lose a loved one to a drunk driver and the horrible aftermath that affects those left behind, especially the children. It is an event that does not have to happen yet others choose to drink and drive and never think they will cause harm to others. Continue to keep watch over your loved ones and protect them from harm. You are a true hero and heroes never die.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Twenty-eight years ago this month, my Father, Robert Richard Dover was killed by an 18 yr old drunk driver. At approximately 6 pm that Sunday evening Daddy moved the traffic cones to direct the traffic into one lane. Less than one hour later a car traveling approximately 40 mph swerved to miss these traffic cones and crashed into the guard shack where my "One Daddy" was stationed. Just before hitting the shack the car also hit a telephone pole which fell onto the building trapping Daddy inside. Rescue personnel were able to pull Daddy's badly burned body from the flames and their report noted "a tighly grasped phone receiver clutched in the officer's charred hand". As you can imagine these were VERY hard words for a young girl in search of answers some 14 years later to read. Daddy was pronounced Dead on the way to Wilford Hall, over 90% of his body was covered in second and third degree burns.

So many things changed that night. My life is still affected by the fact that my One Daddy is not physically here. He will always be in my heart and his legacy will live on through me and through my boys. I will not allow a Drunk Driver to take that away from my family. As harsh as that my sound, I'm really not angry. I live a very happy life choosing to celebrate a bright and happy life my One Daddy lead. Yes, it was short - but it was GOOD!

I Love You One Daddy!

Robert R. Dover was my brother-in-law. At the time of his death he was only 26 years old. He was engaged and was to married in May of that year. My husband his younger brother was to be his best man. Robert was studing in the guard shack on a Sunday evening when a young man 16 years old and drunk ran into it. The shack burst into flames and Robert died. The young man was saved. Robert left behind a young daughter named Laura who called him her "One Daddy". She is a beautiful young women now who has shared her sad story of her father's death through the MADD program. My husband spent many long nights in our living room listening to the song "Tell Laura I love her". I lost my favorite brother-in-law that night, my husband lost his best friend, and for Laura her "One Daddy".

I was in the final weeks of basic (before going on to SP school) right across the way and I never heard about this incident until I read it here.

God Bless you and all your loved ones.
