Reflections for Criminal Investigator Brett Alan McKee

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 17th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer. He was also a fellow Marine, so I must bid you Semper Fi.

Rest In Peace

Special Agent Brett McKee although I knew of you, I met you for the very first time in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm when you were a Staff Sergeant assigned to the United States Marine Corps Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the 1St Marine Division. I used to drive several miles up to your CID position to visit from time-to-time from the Port of Al-Jubayl where I also worked as a CID Criminal Investigator. I want people to know that you were one of the nicest human beings I ever met in our line of work and that what I remember most about you was your warm smile. Brett, God bless you and your family.

Dear Brett,
it has been seventeen years since I have seen you, but you are always with me in spirit. As you once told me, "I am not finished talking to you..." We will continue our conversation one day and I hope that I will have made you as proud of me as I was of you.

Semper Fidelis,
Elizabeth

This goes to show we all should stay in touch with those who have made an impression in our lives. I have been searching for Marines I was stationed with at Camp Smith, HI. My heart just broke when I came to a memorial page for BA. He set high standards and lived up to them - the rest of the Marines couldn't help but follow in example. He was such a gentleman and good friend It breaks my heart tremendously and I hate that I didn't get to say more to him before he left this world. I don't know if family continues to read the postings, but just know he has always had a special place in my heart.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Like so many others I too had fond memories of "B.A." particularly at Cp Smith. Brett was a one-of-a-kind person. Anyone that had the pleasure of being in his company as a friend or co-worker without a doubt had to be touched by him. In the words of famous baseball player Jackie Robinson "a life is not important except for the impact it has on other lives".
Brett had a profound impact on many lives and this memorial page bears witness to that truth so many years after his passing. Until we meet again...Sgt P

I remember Brett like it was yesterday while we served in the Gulf together during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Brett was an outstanding Marine, Investigator, Man, Husband and friend. We had a great time together, I still have many pictures with Brett, Beswick, Petricka, Mcgowan, Peterson, and the bunch. I heard the news and was deeply saddened. God Bless...

Like "Goggles", I too went to MP school and Camp Smith with Brett. He was a bit older than all of us, and a natural leader. He always led the pack in promotions and assignments, and we constantly measured our success against his. I met him again in Camp LeJeune and served with him during Desert Storm.

He was very disarming with his southern charm, and "sneaky" smart. Many a knucklehead went into the interview room smiling at his humor but came out quite humbled.

He was a beautiful human being, and I think of him often.

I too served with B.A., from L.E. 31 at Lackland AFB to Camp Smith, HI. He was one of those guys that no matter how many little cliques there were, he would be a welcome member of any of them. As the "older guy" in our class he was always acting like the big brother. After being discharged I lost contact with you B.A., I just found out about our loss of you while looking through togetherweserved.com. Thank you for all your kindness and leadership. You left your mark on all of us. You will always be remembered. Hello to Jeff and Julie. Semper Fi, R.I.P. Brett.

I also served with B.A. McKee at Camp Smith FMFPAC in the early 1980's, along with Jeffrey Davis. At one time, we were all friends. It's hard to lose touch, and B.A. certainly was an extraordinary person. I'm sad to see that he is no longer with us. My condolences to his wife and child, as well as to his parents and brothers.

I SERVED WITH "B. A." FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT CLASS ,LACKLAND AFB, 1983 THROUGH OUR DEPLOYMENT AT CAMP H. M . SMITH. THERE WAS NEVER A BETTER FRIEND. SOMEHOW I ALWAYS THOUGHT HE WOULD BECOME A D.I. AT PARIS ISLAND. HE WOULD HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE GREATS. HE WAS THERE IN MY TIME OF NEED, I ONLY WISH I COULD HAVE BEEN THERE FOR HIM. I THINK OF HIM OFTEN. YOU WILL BE GREATLY MISSED.

Brett was my brother-in-law and I always looked up to him as the big brother I never had. His memorial at home states "He loved people and laughter." That's still how we all remember him to this day. Still missed, never forgotten.
