Family, Friends & Fellow Officers Remember...

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 17th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Jennifer and Brock, lI have always felt that the bullets that kill our loved ones don't just kill them, but a part of everyone who calls them beloved. Reading about your parents exemplifies that truth. I hold you and other family members in thought and prayer today.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I remember this day like it was yesterday. I had just graduated high school and wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement. I rode with a couple of the senior troopers and met Brett more than once. He was a loving caring family man who would do anything for his community and family. I achieved the goal of being in law enforcement and Brett's great sacrifice will always be in the back of my mind.

God bless your children.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to This Officer, as well as the Family, Friends, Department and Community.

This is a loss that will never be forgotten. Hours will turn into days, days turn into weeks, weeks into months and months into years but, the difference that these officers have made will last forever.

We lost Our Deputy Morris Taylor on September 14, 2002. When he joined the other Angels in Blue.

All this pain and suffering on the part of your family is because of one individual that did not respect life or others. I remember that heartbreaking day, a lifetime ago now. I was young then, and living North of you. I now live here, in Klamath, and I see your picture in the office now and then. I wonder what you would've been like. You look strikingly similar to my favorite Officer back home. I wonder if you were like him.

It breaks my heart to think of your story. And to realize that there will be more for as long as I live.

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Today, September 30, 2003 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Deputy Bret Clodfelter who died on this date eleven years ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Deputy Clodfelter's sacrifice will never be forgotten.
