Paw-Paw
This past Thursday we had another memorial in your honor by Sheriff Johnson and the Alamance County Sheriffs Dept. I got to wear my class A uniform this time. Everybody kept saying how much I look like you. I regret not ever being able to meet you, but I'm glad to keep your legacy alive. I only hope I can be as great an officer as you were. Even though I never met you I love you and I cant wait to finally meet you.

Daddy,
Today, the 45th anniversary of when you were taken away from me, was a day of honor and remembrance of you. The Sheriff's Department, led by Sheriff Terry Johnson, hosted a memorial service for you at the cemetery. Ricky and I were there, Nancy, Grant & Katie, Judy, Billy, and Louise, and some close friends were also. It was wonderful Daddy. You would have been so honored and proud. Chaplain David Carter spoke and said many wonderful things about you as recalled from someone you worked with at the department. Of course I still miss you and always will! My heart aches today as I do miss you yet at the same time, it is overflowing with pride because you are MY Daddy! I have doubted many things in my life and have been hurt in many ways, but the one thing that has remained constant is the fact I know you loved me and I am your little girl! I may have only had 10 years on earth with you, but I have more love for you than I can express in this little paragraph. One day I will see you again and then we will have eternity to catch up.
I love you Daddy!!!!!!!!!

You are remembered today by a Durham native and the mother of a fallen officer. My son, Larry Lasater who was also born in Durham, died when shot on April 23, 2005 during a foot pursuit of two bank robbers while serving with the Pittsburg, California Police Department.

Jerry, your sacrifice is not forgotten. Rest in Peace. Your memory is honored and revered 39 years after your death and will continue to be. In reading the loving reflection left by your daughter Donna, I can see that you were an amazing man who is loved and missed by so many, but especially your daughter.

To his loved ones, I share your anquish in losing a beloved family member which has to be life's greatest sorrow but time never diminishes our love. Donna, you are in my heart's embrace today.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Jerry gave to his community and the citizens of North Carolina, and the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on September 1, 1970.

As I reflect today, my birthday, I remember the one I loved more than life itself, my daddy. Although it has been almost 40 years, I remember how much you loved me Daddy and how much I loved you. I look at my 19 year old son, Grant, and I see you. He looks just like you and I thank God for that. I miss you so much, still, and I will always be proud that you were MY dad.
Rest well and know one day, I will see you again, for my Lord has promised!!!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
