It's good to affirm that even in 1918, the Akron Police Department's anti-crime efforts were running afoul of organized crime. It's obvious that their pursuit of justice and attempts to rid their city of criminal elements incurred the wrath of well organized criminals. The murder of Officer Costigan and his fellow officers reflects the highest of ethical and righteous principles, of which all peace officers should aspire to accomplish. Despite the dangers, Akron and their officers vigorously pursued dangerous and well organized evil doers, despite the high costs. For that we should all honor Officer Costigan and all others felled in similar circumstances.

It always saddens me to come here and see an officer w/ no reflections. I know you were murdered in 1918 and that is quite a long time ago, but here today in 2004 I want to say that your life meant something and that I thank you for trying to protect the streets and people of Akron back in 1918. I don't know if the person who murdered you was ever caught, but I hope so. The method in which you and Officer Hunt were murdered was cowardly and cold-blooded. God Bless you, Officer Costigan.

With respect and admiration,

A 911 Dispatcher
Houston County 911
