Rest in peace Sheriff Collins.

Several years ago I personally spoke to a woman who was the daughter of Sheriff Collins. She provided me with his picture that you see here. She told me she was old, tired, and disgusted with having to go to Raleigh from the mountains of North Carolina once a year to defend her father and explain why his killer should not be turned loose to the parole board. When she stopped going they released him.

I recently found out that you are my great grandmother's brother. I suppose that makes you my great Uncle Porter. Great indeed. Unknowingly, Ive followed in your footsteps with Baltimore County P.D. Very proud of you.

A special thank you goes out to Sheriff Porter C. Collins. We here in Alleghany County sometimes think that this type of thing only happens off of this mountian. There are dangers here at home as most of of Law Men and Women know. I would like to thank you and your family for your service..You were a brave man and have earned a hero status in my book...

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 55th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Given the size and locale of the area you policed, it is likely you knew the man you were arresting. I am wondering what kind of life he led after his parole. I hope he was remorseful and didn't reoffend, but it must have bothered your family to see him freed. In North Carolina, because an appellate court recently upheld an old statute covering offenses in a certain time bracket which ruled that a life sentence only meant 80 years, many offenders in the 70's are going to be released with the time calculation NC uses.
Rest In Peace
