I am the great grandson of Gus Chitwood, grandson to Rosebud Chitwood, whose lavender voice I profoundly miss. I stumbled upon this website purely by happenstance while researching a long lost branch of my family tree. I did not even know my great-grandfather’s name, let alone his profession, until my search brought me here. It fills me with pride and honor to know my forebear was such a courageous and respectful Ranger. I am very interested in the origins of this picture; and if more exist.

Gus was shot and killed when my grandmother was 8 years old. Her name was Rosebud Chitwood and she loved her father so very much. Rosebud's birthday was on or very near February 13th when Gus was murdered. He and his wife had eloped and came west to start a new life together. Gus was a Texas Ranger and had worked for an Englishman on a ranch in the mountains of New Mexico before coming to El Paso. The family had hoped to go on into Mexico to ranch there, but were halted in El Paso by the Mexican revolution.
