I served with Richard Beck as a fellow patrol officer between 1984-1986. This was before he became a SGT. He was a good man who was quiet in nature and was always a good listener. Through my many travels, I've never forgotten this good man, whom I've had the pleasure of knowing.

Sgt. Beck was my cousin. He was one of the nicest men to have ever walked the face of the earth. He was also a Vietnam Vet. Richard had a kind heart and loved being a Police Officer. He loved helping people and did not have an unkind bone in his body. I was proud to be his cousin and I was proud to be his friend.

I knew Sergeant Beck well because we worked at Gibsons many years ago together and he was one of the finest, sweetest, most upstanding men I have EVER known. He always had a smile on his face and loved what he did. I remember when I would take my then 5 year old daughter to Gibsons to get her an icee Richard would see us and come over and pick on her and always asked for a drink of her icee. After his passing she saw his picture on the news and said " Look mommy, there is our friend". and she was so right. He WAS our friend, my co worker and a wonderful family man. Richard I miss you more than words and I think of you all the time. Your funeral was one of the most beautiful ones I had ever seen and there were LEO from all over the place that came to pay their final respects to you. Rest high on that mountain my sweet friend. Until we meet again someday. I loved you like a dad and was so blessed to have known you. EOW 11/17/1991.

I was thinking about you Richard and was remembering on thanksgiving when I was a kid you came by in uniform and I felt so much pride because you were my cousin. I can still see you smiling. It's the only way I can picture you. I'll see you again someday. Love you.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I knew SGT BECK when I was a young boy, and even though I was not a Police Officer when he was with us, I am now and truly regret for the family's loss. My his survivors carry on his name stake in a manner proud and high.

I did not know Sergeant Beck but it makes no difference. He was a brother in blue and will forever be remembered as a true American hero, thanks in part to the ODMP.
It was 14 years ago today that he gave his life in the line of duty. I would like to say to his family, friends and co-workers that we will never forget or take for granted the sacrifice he made. May each of you continue to experience the eternal love and endless blessings of our Lord and Savior.

I didn't get the chance to meet Sgt. Richard Beck before he died. But I am close friends with his surviving family. By hearing things about him from his family it is almost like knowing him. He is missed by his friends, family and his department.
