I never dreamed it would be me
My name for all eternity
Recorded here at this hallowed place
Alas, my name, no more my face

"In the line of duty" I hear them say
My family now the price will pay
My folded flag stained with their tears
We only had those few short years

The badge no longer on my chest
I sleep now in eternal rest
My sword I pass to those behind
And pray they keep this thought in mind

I never dreamed it would be me
And with heavy heart and bended knee
I ask for all here from the past
Dear God, let my name be the last

"Policeman's Prayer"

When I start my tour of duty God,
Wherever crime may be,
as I walk the darkened streets alone,
Let me be close to thee.

Please give me understanding with both the young and old.
Let me listen with attention until their story's told.
Let me never make a judgment in a rash or callous way,
but let me hold my patience let each man have his say.

Lord if some dark and dreary night,
I must give my life,
Lord, with your everlasting love
protect my children and my wife.

(Author Unknown)

Never forgotten. Rest in Peace.

What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us. What we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal. -Albert Pine

Honoring you on the 45th anniversary of being called home to our Lord. Thank you for your distinguished service. Even after 45 years, people from all over this country think and pray for you and your family that I know have made you proud. I had the pleasure of corresponding with your granddaughter last year via email and can tell you that you are still so loved and sorely missed by your family yet you continue to make them proud more than ever. How fitting she would name her son, your great grandson after you. Andrea I hope you are doing super well as well as your entire family. Officer Campbell, may you continue to rest sir in the Loving arms of our Lord.

Sent with utmost respect,

Brandon J. Sullivan

Hopefully you and Officer Hettinger have reunited in a much better place where the two of you can watch over your law enforcement brethren from above. Always remembered.

I am Ian's granddaughter and I check his page very often, and it warms my heart that so many people continue to post comments. It's neat to know that my grandfather has not gone forgotten.

I've read the book "The Onion Field" and each time I do I remember Mr Campbell and my thoughts and prayers go to his family and friends. I was very young when this happened but it has left a mark on my heart.

I saw the movie for the first time yesterday. It seems the criminals always win. Thank you for your service. My heart goes out to Karl Ettinger who was a victim also. God will be good to you both now.

When I first became a police officer an old sergeant told me to watch the movie "The Onion Field". Ever since that day I have always carried a back-up and thought about Ian Campbell and Karl Ettinger and how to do all I can to avoid a similar situation. All these years later, these two men and the horrible ordeal still influences all of us in law enforcement. Rest in peace gentlemen and God bless your families. YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN

Thank you officer campbell. When I hear the bag pipes I always remember you. Your life is forever immoralized. For who you are and what you stood for. The safety of civilians. You are a hero. I will never forget what you sacrificed for the safety of others. Thank you.

Whether it was yesterday, or more than 44 years ago - senseless loss is senseless loss. I dare say that every copper that hears of your story will reflect on their own experiences and realise that there is a fair bit of luck that keeps us from being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Rest in peace.

I did not know you but have followed your case for some time. You are a brave man and the LAPD lost one of it's finest officers on that dreadful night back in 1963. I hope you rest well Officer Campbell.

You were that which others did not want to be. You went where others feared to go and did what others failed to do. You asked nothing from those who gave nothing and reluctantly accepted the fact of eternal loneliness should you fall. You have seen the face of terror and felt the stinging cold of fear. You have loved, cried, suffered, and hoped, but most of all, you have lived times others would say were “best forgotten.” At least you were able to say that you were proud of what you were - a cop.

Thank you, hero.

Sleep soldier! still in honored rest
Your truth and valor wearing;
The bravest are the tenderest; ---
The loving are the daring.

I was a young man when I first saw the movie. It moved me to read the book. Several years later I would take the oath as a New York City Police Officer. In my twenty years of service I have listened to the bagpipes at various funerals for fallen officers and they still move me so. Inside my head I still see that piper on the hill from the movie and think of Officer Campbell. May God shine his light upon the ones he left behind, especially Officer Campbell's family and Karl Ettinger.
