Reflections for Agent Eliezer Ramos-Velez

The true measure of a person
is not found in the
might of their arm,
their wealth
or their power –
it is found in the strength
of their character.

There is no greater testimony to
ones character, than ones
willingness to sacrifice all,
in the noble quest of
providing protection to all
whom they serve.

We know from the Holy Scriptures that Peace Officers have a sacred task to enforce the laws of the land to protect the innocent and punish the guilty:

"For the policeman [Peace Officer] does not frighten people who are doing right; but those doing evil will always fear him [her]. So, if you don't want to be afraid, keep the laws and you will get along well. The policeman [Peace Officer] is sent by God to help you. But if you are doing something wrong, of course you should be afraid, for he [she] will have you punished. He [She] is sent by God for that very purpose. Obey the laws, then, for two reasons: first, to keep from being punished, and second, just because you know you should." [Romans 13: 3-5 TLB]

"Somebody killed a policeman today,
And a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect who shot him will stand up in court,
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend alone many long nights.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
To his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
It happened in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
A cop put his life on the line.
Now, his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call and gave us his all,
And a part of America died."

We , your mother and I , prayed for you to be conceived . We asked God for you to be a boy , so your mother had a son and a daughter , as she wanted . I saw you grow along our sons and daughters as a brother to them . You were always with a smile and those beautiful green eyes . You went to school with some of our kids . Graduated with my daughter.. You were more than neighbors and friends. We were family for life. When we learned about your departure from this world I called my son , your buddy , his first thought was: mom go to his mother now ,be with her. My son ,my daughter and another neighbor like a brother , went to search for the mother of your child . They brought them to your childhood home to be together will all of us to mourn your passing . This is a testament of your life not only as an agent of the police force but as a son ,brother ,partner and father.
You will be remembered with love from your family of neighbors for life. Love transcends time , space and even death. You just left before us and arrived with God sooner than us . We’ll see you in heaven Eli . God bless all of you blue bloods. A great thank you, from all of us ,his family ,for your expressions of support and for your commitment to service and protection. God bless all of you .

Your forever neighbor

Sgto.
