As a fellow Juniata Countain no words can express our gratitude to you. As Reed said our town was cheering our girls onto states that day just hours prior to this horrific event. Every time I drive through Mifflintown it is a constant reminder of the tragedy our little town suffered. Our town has blue and black ribbons on the meters and Thank You PSP signs all throughout each end of the county. We even have a memorial up for Jay down by Harshbargers. I will be praying for comfort for the whole Rougeau family especially Chloe and Jays mom.

Jay Rougeau, was killed in the line of duty serving as a Pennsylvania State Police Trooper. It was an act of senseless violence that took the most genuine, beautiful soul away from this world. But this act showed me how precious life is. Allow me to paint you a picture of Saturday.

Myself, and many other people woke up Saturday morning, sick to our stomachs for a good reason. The Juniata County Girls Softball team was headed to the PIAA State Championship Game as #2 in the whole state. They were escorted by local Fire and EMS departments between the hours of 8-10 AM. The streets were lined, shoulder to shoulder, bumper to bumper with supporters. Screaming, chanting, clapping, blowing their horns, recording, and taking pictures. Life was good, just for a moment I felt a smile come across my face. Something I haven’t felt for months.

The day went downhill around 11 AM. A gray in color truck pulled into the PSP Lewistown Barracks, and fired an semi-automatic rifle into several PSP vehicles. Approximately 45 minutes later, LT. Wagner was patrolling Mifflintown, Juniata County in the hunt for this vehicle, that is when the subject aimed his rifle out the driver side door, and opened fire on the trooper, then drove off. Luckily, there were witnesses who ran to the aid of LT. Wagner, and dialing 9-1-1.

For me, shortly after returning to the station, we were dispatched, along with EMS for a shooting. Our stomachs are now sick for a very different reason. The voice of the dispatcher was scared and worried, which told us something was really wrong. We responded within seconds… That is when he alerted us that it was an officer involved shooting, and there was an officer down. I remember, for a moment, seeing the streets empty. Everything was quiet now as we backed into the station bay. Then I snapped back into reality, and raced to the call. As we approached the scene, there were already a dozen cop cars, all rendering aid to the trooper, lying lifeless on the ground. EMS went right to work, stabilizing him, and transporting him to the local hospital to be life flighted to a trauma center.

Shortly after the ambulance returned from the hospital, LEO was alerted of a second shooting, the officer not responding to his radio. The dispatcher must have asked a dozen times for his status, praying for him to answer. Troopers arrived from both directions, within minutes. That is when a warzone broke out between the troopers and the suspect armed with a Safari type .458 rifle. Troopers bailing out of their cars, while in motion due to becoming under fire. Others, driving directly into the suspects truck. Shot after shot, explosion after explosion. Mag after Mag. Nearly 100 Troopers opened fire on the same target, while being shot at, with the same goal. Killing the target. Roughly 500 shots fired later, the truck came to a halt, at the tree line. Riddled with bullets. The subject… dead.

It's not supposed to be this way; it feels so wildly unfair. I know full-well that my job carries a lot of weight. His love for the people in his life burned so bright. He had the warmest smile, most inviting demeanor, kindest eyes, and sweetest heart. I never once heard anyone say a bad thing about him. I don't like to pick favorites, but it's safe to say Jay Rougeau was pretty much everyone's. The fragility of life is becoming more and more palpable to me each passing day. The saying, "live every day like it's your last" feels so cliché, but when are we all going to start actually taking it to heart? Growing old is a privilege denied to so many... and today, I'm absolutely shattered that Jay Rougeau was one of them.
