"Somebody killed a policeman today,
And a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect who shot him will stand up in court,
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend alone many long nights.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
To his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
It happened in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
A cop put his life on the line.
Now, his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call and gave us his all,
And a part of America died."

A police officer should be remembered not by how he died but by how he lived! A great man has gone to secure a safe path for the rest of us to follow. Thank you to you, your family, and the Selma Police Department. Our country is a little less safe without you. Rest in Peace Brother!

Officer Carrasco
Thanks for your distinguished service to the citizens of Selma, and the state of California. I've interacted with Fresno area law enforcement off and on through the years, and I've always been impressed with their professionalism and zeal. Thanks for your sacrifice and dedicated service. I hope that your child grows up knowing that his/her father gave his life to his community, because that is who he was--trying to make his city safe, while at the same time making a difference.

Jim Lopey, Asst. Sheriff (ret)
Washoe County Sheriff (Reno, Nevada) & NVDPS (current)

Officer Carrasco, I am touched by your story. For a short time in my youth, I too, participated in the Explorer program with my local police department. My wife was born just one or two months after her own father was killed performing his duties as a forest ranger. At the time of his death, he was fighting an arson fire in a national forest in Southern California. The person who set the fire was never identified and apprehended. My wife never got to know her father as she grew up. Sadly, your child will not get to know you, as he or she grows up. My wife passed away a few years ago, so I am at least comforted now in the knowledge that she was reunited with dad in heaven, just as one day you and your child will be reunited as well. Rest in peace, and thank you for your service.
