Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Darnell Calhoun

It is heartbreaking that the Riverside County Sheriff Department has lost another warrior, the second in the last couple of weeks. The grieving hadn't even stopped for Deputy Isaiah Cordero, and the grieving will continue for the loss of Deputy Darnell Calhoun.

Condolences to the wife and family of Deputy Calhoun. Please know that his service was a calling to protect and serve his community and country, and we appreciate all that he has given. God's blessings to each and every one of you.

And to the child of Deputy Calhoun, know that your dad was a hero, a warrior, and a man who heeded a higher call to serve and protect his community and do very difficult job. This nation could use more men like your dad. I sincerely hope that the law enforcement community surrounds you with love and support and you grow to know the value of your dad's contributions.

And to the Riverside Sheriff's Department, stay strong and stay safe. So many of you are wounded with all that you have been through. Often times those wounds can not be seen. Take care of yourselves and take care of each other. We appreciate you.

Sheriff Calhoun, our world is filled with evil people, and yet, you dedicated your life that others may live in peace. Our Lord, who sees all, will reward you abundantly. My heart goes for the baby that will not experience the love of a dad. May our Lord immerse you, your wife and the baby in His Divine Mercy. Rest in peace, good and faithful servant.

"The Final Inspection"

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

It is with profound sadness that we reflect on the passing of a dedicated sheriff’s deputy, who was killed in the line of duty. On January 13, 2023, Deputy Darnell Calhoun died in the service of his community, leaving behind a long career of public service. The country mourns the loss of a beloved public servant and a devoted protector of the law. The scene of the incident was not only a place of tragedy, but also a testament of courage and heroism, as the late deputy responded selflessly to a call for assistance. We are left with an appalling reminder of the risks that deputies take for us in order to protect us, and we acknowledge the heroism and dedication of Deputy Darnell Calhoun.
