Andrew, I never thought in a million years I'd be leaving a remembrance for the child of someone I knew back at LAPD, but here we are. I knew your dad, David, and remember him fondly. I know he passed a few years back.

Your courage is well known. Your example will shine. We will still respond to the calls for service, because that's what we do - never knowing if our own story ends on that call, or the next.

May your wife and children be comforted. May your family and friends be supported. Thank you for your service to the people of El Paso County and the State of Colorado. And may a loving Heavenly Father grant you eternal rest and may His perpetual light shine upon you.

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

Abraham Lincoln

Ma'am, I do not have the courage to do your husband's job, yet I rest easier knowing my wife and boys enjoy the safety he and those like him help provide. Even now, your husband still helps me as a father to teach my two boys that we owe deep gratitude and respect both to heros like your husband and to their families. And so I will tell them what I can learn about your husband tonight, and suggest that a prayer for you and your boys is in order.

My condolences, Mrs. Peery.
