It is always sad to see any Peace Officer in the Blue/Grey/Brown line cut down, but it is especially sad to see a young man with so much life ahead of him murdered in the line of duty. We send our love to the wife and family of this fine young man and with it our prayers that the Lord will send you comfort and the knowledge that your young Deputy Sheriff is even now at the right-hand side of the throne of God. He will now take his place in the special Honor Guard for our Savior which is made up of his brother and sister officers who already have gone before him. Fear not, you will see your beloved again in that fair land just beyond the misty horizon of this life.

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

Abraham Lincoln
