Reflections for Detective Wilbert D. Mora

M y condolences to the family of New York City Police Officer Wilbert Mora who just lost his life as of today after being shot in the line of duty during a domestic dispute that took the life of fellow New York City Police Officer Jason Rivera just last week. They also go out to the entire New York City Police Department and to the entire City of New York on this terrible tragedy that has happened. His name will be inscribed on both the national and state law enforcement memorials as of next year. Not just the family and the police department mourn this death but so does an entire community, the state and nation mourn as well.

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

Abraham Lincoln
