Reflections for Corporal Charles Galloway

Charles, there are literally no words to express how good of a person you were. You were always around when I delivered the mail to the townhouses where our unstable resident lived. When I delivered near his townhouses after he threatened my son and myself, you would park nearby until I finished my delivery. I thank you for watching out for me during that time. You were like a giant Teddy Bear. I enjoyed talking with you on many occasions. Your calm demeanor and easy smile could put anyone at ease. You will be missed greatly. Rest easy Charles!

The true measure of a person
is not found in the
might of their arm,
their wealth
or their power –
it is found in the strength
of their character.

There is no greater testimony to
ones character, than ones
willingness to sacrifice all,
in the noble quest of
providing protection to all
whom they serve.

"Somebody killed a policeman today,
And a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect who shot him will stand up in court,
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend alone many long nights.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
To his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
It happened in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
A cop put his life on the line.
Now, his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call and gave us his all,
And a part of America died."

I worked with and supervised Charles Galloway when he worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Institutional Division (TDCJ-ID) as a Sergeant of Correctional officers at the John T. Montford Unit in Lubbock, Texas. When I learned of this tragedy I immediately felt the pain and shock as one would with the loss of a family member. My condolences go out to his family and his brothers and sisters in the law enforcement community.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Corporal Charles Galloway and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever.

To the family, friends, and colleagues of Corporal Galloway, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on.  Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be.  In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Corporal Galloway is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family, and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.
