Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Henry Nicholas Laxson

My friend, we would argue about why I was becoming a firefighter while you were on the “other side” of our first responder aspirations. You were the kindest man when i worked at the store, and you were a gift of happiness many people won’t understand. I miss you on these random days. Much love to you bro, much much love.

You were in a class of your own Lax, the hardest working cop Ive ever known. I had to leave this reflection after watching your dad stand in as Willy’s best man last night. I got to eat dinner and share a drink with your parents and fiancé. REST IN PEACE BRO

I had the honor of being at Henry's funeral and it was somber and heart felt moment because you could feel the love from all the family, friends and the community. I happen to be there during that time due to the related training that I and fellow officers were attending called 'Advance Peer Support For Law Enforcement Officers'. I happen to be in the same class as one of Henry's closest friend, as he was going through the same training. I know it hit him like a ton of bricks at some point not being able to see his friend again.

In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whose blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

The true measure of a person
is not found in the
might of their arm,
their wealth
or their power –
it is found in the strength
of their character.

There is no greater testimony to
ones character, than ones
willingness to sacrifice all,
in the noble quest of
providing protection to all
whom they serve.

Rest in Peace brother and watch over us. We will protect and serve from here on in your honor.

I fight not for glory or fame, for they are momentary. I fight for those who can't. I fight for Justice. I fight for the oppressed and the down trodden. And if I should lose my life for these just causes, then I have no regrets, For I serve to protect the innocent. It matters not where or when, for evil knows no boundaries. Be it fire, flood, or the threat of tyranny, I will not flee. Justice is my weapon. Faith is my shield. Hope is my armor. Cry not at my passing, for it was my Honor to fight for you. Shed not tears of sorrow, But tears of joy, for now, I stand with God.

Ms. Laxson while the overwhelming pain you, your family and the members of the Clayton County Police Department feel today, please know that you will never be alone or spend another minute of your life in the dark.

Your husband gave you several precious gifts that only he could give as his last shift came to and end on November 30, 2021. He will always be walking ahead of you to light your path and clear the way for your safety. If you stop and close your eyes you will feel his presence and now that he is there with you. And when you open your eyes, you will see one or two or ten of his brothers in blue that are actually lighting your way and keeping you safe. He ended his watch with the knowledge that we will take care of you in his absence until you are reunited.

Please know that no matter where you are or what City or State you are in. If you need help, simply dial 911 and tell the dispatcher you are an Angel wife of a Police Officer and every officer that hears that call go out will be responding to you running 33 traffic from all over the City.

This is what we do. You are our family. While your husband and our Brother didn't want to leave you on November 30, he left knowing that this date was preordained by God and while we mourn today, we will celebrate his life starting tomorrow.

We have a saying here in Texas, "show me your friends and I will show you your future". We have seen the generosity and courage of your husband and our Brother and we know your future will be bright and the Clayton County Police Department will never forget his sacrifice.

Retired Homicide Detective
