I was fortunate enough to be have worked with Mike when he began his career in 2013. While the first reaction is to remember the type of cop he was, I think its important to remember the kind of MAN he was.

In this County, the Deputies work understaffed and alone. Covering thousands of miles by themselves, with the nearest back up often hours away. Building searches, high risk stops, physical altercations...dangerous duties that most cops would never do without backup; these Deputies often have no choice but to do alone. Lowest pay in the state, least resources, and thousands of miles to drive every single day. 60+ mile drives between calls. Its those frustrations that led to me leaving the profession. But Mike...he never waivered.

Mike was enthusiastic and learned quickly. He showed incredible promise as a rookie, only proven by his fast promotion. He sacrificed for service, in both military and law enforcement.

But most importantly, he truly honored the public he served. While many rookies start their career hot headed and combative, Mike showed respect and appreciation. He quickly built a reputation as a cop with integrity. One who the public could trust, even by those who have trust issues with law enforcement. A man who, even off duty, would drop everything to help a stranger in need. Who children could run to, and be greeted with warm welcome and a smile.

He wasn't just a good man....he was a kind man. Kindness is something that if often forgotten by unappreciated rural cops.

He really was one of the best of us. The world is a worse place without him.
