It is with great sadness that I heard Sergeant Nick Risner was killed while protecting the citizens. Had it not been for his bravery many people could have been killed. Thank you is just not enough Sergeant Risner. May God watch over your family, Sheffield Police Department, your friends and the many citizens that never met you but morn your death!

An officer stands between the darkness and all good people he or she protects and this is why most of us, will never fully know or see the depths of that darkness. I have never forgotten a poem that I heard years ago at the funeral of another young officer.
He had been killed while driving his radio car to assist another officer in following a stolen car. I am unsure what the title is or who the author is and so I am unable to give credit to the author but the message is still sad, important, and meaningful:

The silence, now, is deafening
where once his laughter fell.

The beat is empty of the one
who knew its streets so well.

The squad room has a vacancy
no one else can occupy.

And so we stand, salute and grieve
again we say 'good-bye'.
